It's junk,
This review is from: Hohner Mini Harp
If you want a nice mini harmonica, I'd highly recommend paying a few dollars more and buying a german made, hohner "little lady". They are much easier to play and sound a whole lot better. I bought a batch of some of those "mini harmonicas" but these ones are made in china and are a very inferior product, for a cute little gag gift, this kind is ok, but if anyone wants a mini harmonica they plan to play, rather than have for looks, I reccomend getting a REAL "little lady".

too tiny.,

It's too small to be useful for anything; You can only sucessfully register two notes. I bought this in the hope of being able to have a smaller harmonica to mess around with and see what sort of sound a hohner would before I put money towards a bigger one. It gives off a really nice true-to-tone sound and it registers really clear and it looks cute if you want to use it for aesthetic value as of "oh, hey, look at me! I have a tiny harmonica!" and nothing more than that.

I bought this harmonica with the intention of making it into a necklace, and it turned out beautifully! If you are interested in successfully playing this instrument you may not be able to because it's so small. But for the aesthetic purpose I chose, it's fantastic.

A Nice Christmas Tree Ornament?,

Yes, it's a tiny harmonica and yes, it's somewhat "cute." However, to be quite honest, this thing is utterly unplayable. I don't mean to sound angry; I mean that if you wanted to play the harmonica on the Hohner 38C Mini Harmonica, I really don't know if you could. The reeds are out of tune and when you blow into all the holes, the sound that comes out of it does not even remotely resemble what you would expect to come out of the first four holes of a "real" harmonica.I only bought this because I was buying a different harmonica and had the option to also purchase this one. I'm not going to rant about how this is a waste of money, because it's less than $2, but I don't suggest buying this "harmonica" if you have intentions of playing it. You could use it as a nice key chain or Christmas Tree ornament, but beyond that, its functionality is severely limited.

Worth it for the price,

You really can't beat the price, but I was only a little disappointed that this wasn't the "Little Lady" which I had expected. All in all a great purchase. Can not beat the price. I bought one for me, and one for the 7 year old I nanny, and we're both crazy about them. Very sturdy instrument.

Mini is good,
This review is from: Hohner Mini Harp
It is small enough to fit in the palm of my hand. I love it, there are four notes. It is probably not a good harmonica to learn on, but if you just want an instrument that's easy to play and can fit in your pocket this is perfect.

Novelty only,

I though a cute little harmonica like the 38c might be playable for tunes with only an an octave range, but I find this almost unplayable. I should have known better - I think there is a limit on the tone one can get out of such a small reed. However, as a novelty item I think it is pretty cute.

I had to change my review of this product. Originally I gave it 4 stars, and called it a decent harmonica for the price. And for three weeks, it was. However, after three weeks of use, one of the draw reeds went way out of tune. I took it apart and found to my dismay that it wasn't caused by an obstruction. It looks like this particular reed was aggressively tuned (you can see the tool marks gouging into the reed). I don't know if this is a normal way of tuning reeds, or not, but unfortunately, the reed is now bent way out of shape at that spot. Maybe I drew too hard, or maybe the reed was weakened at the tuning point and bent further during normal use. At any rate, there doesn't appear to be anything that I can do to fix it.I've since bought another one, and this one is easier to play than the last and sounds better. Luck of the draw? At $1.50, this obviously isn't intended to be a pitch-perfect, high-quality orchestral piece. What you get is a tiny harmonica that you can literally take anywhere and plays a complete scale. The overall quality isn't the absolute best, but it's certainly no worse than any of the other inexpensive Chinese-made harmonicas I've used. The tone seems a little off, and drawing is a little tough. The holes in the comb are closely spaced. I'm still a fairly green harmonica player, but right out of the package I was able to play the first few bars of "Ode to Joy" on it without too much difficulty. |
