A truly wonderful 'Blues Harmonica,' really!,
By Carlos E. Sicilia H. "Carlos Sicilia" (Caracas, DF, Venezuela) - See all my reviews I could stop my review right here. But I can tell you still more: This harmonica has a perfect size. His quality feels all over its construction. It's strong, yet friendly. Its sounds emerge purely and crystaline. But, at the same time it has that wonderful "blues" feeling that makes it such an special instrument. I like the tonality, the style of the air flow, and the wooden structure inside it. If you have never played an harmonica before, this is the one for you. If you are a master at it, you already know this is the best you can get. Go, get it, and enjoy for years to come! Nice sound, but a few design problems.,
This review is from: Hohner Blues Harp Harmonica, Key of C (Electronics)
Just so you know where I'm coming from, I'm a beginner at harmonica with just a few harps.I was anxious to try this harp, as I hadn't tried one with a wood comb yet and the sound didn't disappoint. It had a bluesy sound without any breaking in. And while I don't yet know how to bend notes, many others have said that this one bends readily. However, I did have a couple of problems with the design. The biggest problem was where the covers meet the reed plates. Hohner designed the reed plates with a slight upturn at the very front of the plates--think of it as a lip or a tiny ridge. I think it's designed that way to make the seal between the covers and the plates tighter--less air to leak, less skin or whiskers getting caught. But the backlash is that the upturned edge of the reed plate is just the tiniest bit sharp. I've heard that some actually have cut their upper lip--I didn't do that but after just a few minutes I had a couple of raw spots. The other design problem, was less severe. The comb is natural wood and Hohner can't always control the grain. In the one I bought, the top corners of each "tooth" of the comb were a little close to the last grain, and several had chipped off, making small edges of sharp wood. I spoke with Hohner about it and they contacted the dealer where I purchased the harp and allowed me to exchange it. They didn't have any other Blues Harps in C so I got a Special 20 to replace it. The Special 20, seems to be a slightly better harp, and at least at my music store was $2 cheaper, so unless you really want a wood comb, I'd go that direction instead.

Great harmonica,

I got this harmonica for Christmas in the key of B. Even though my friend didn't know squat about harmonicas he surprisingly came out with this one. This is one of Honers newer harmonicas, part of the "MS" series. It has a great tone and is very "bright" sounding. Bending notes is not a problem and it's a very loud and strong sound one which would sound great amplified (haven't played with this one on stage yet.) overall its a great sounding harp that i'd recomend to all players from beginers to pros.

How can this be the standard?,

I am amazed as how most music shops will sell you this harmonica when you ask as for one as a beginner. This was my first harmonica, and over the years I have discovered its multiple limitations compared to other models.Hohner's Special 20, for example, is in the same price range and it is much easier to bend, overblow (after adjusting the reeds), much tighter... it is a much better harmonica. I strongly suggest not buying a Hohner Blues Harp.

This was my first Harmonica and I found it really easy to use, and I would recommend it to any harmonica player, new or old.

This was my first harmonica, and I've learned just about all the basic playing techniques with it. It's a good, accurately toned harmonica and has a beautiful sound. I've been playing in a band for a while, and playing a trombone isn't really something you can do for fun in your free time, so I bought a harmonica and I play it sometimes at school. It's easy to learn with and probably also good with professionals. The only thing I can't do yet is bend notes, but I'm not sure if that's the harmonica or just my novice skills...

Great Sounding Blues Harp,

Definately the blusiest harp I've ever played and probably will ever play.Only complaint I have is that it wears out far too easily. If you play it like crazy and put a lot of spit in it, dont expect it to last too long. but at $20 a pop, and with the ability to blow the roof off a performance or open mic night, it's worth it for me.

I can't say enough good about this instrument. I have owned this harp for over 20 years and it still plays as good as it did on day one - fantastic!! You can tell from the ratio of good reviews to bad that as with anything, a bad one may slip through QC occasionally (rarely), but Amazon has a great return/exchange program.

Lovin my Harmonica,
By I'm loving it. I'm not a music master, so I really do not know how it compares to other Harmonicas; I can say that it exceeds my expectations. I carry it in the case it comes with, which I like as it protects the Harmonica very well. |
