I bought my son this harmonica at a toy store for a little more money, but it was worth every penny. He's only fourteen months but has already found his musical talent in this simple instrument. The plastic is sturdy and the sound is unmistakably Hohner. He's stepped on it, bitten it, and spit all over it and it seems to be holding up just fine (he's always supervised while playing his harmonica). I would recommend this toy, I mean, instrument to anyone who needs to buy a gift or wants to introduce their kids to music at any age. In fact, I'm buying more to give away.

Quality and sound are similar to other low-end Hohners. A little quieter than most and certainly less expensive. Purchased four. All reeds work well. Loved the colors. Plastic has no taste or smell. Smooth playing action. I wish I had 100 to give away as gifts to friends and family. Perfect first musical instrument or as a stocking stuffer.

Better than most - not a "toy",
This review is from: Hohner Kids Clearly Colorful Translucent Harmonica, Assorted Colors (Toy)
Unlike many of the other reviews, I DO know how to play a harmonica and I have some very expensive instruments to compare this to.Of course it's not a Marine Band or a Lee Oskar for less than $4, it's not even Blues Band. It's as tight as a Piedmont Blues harp and sounds about the same though. The plastic body and comb just aren't going to have the same volume and tone as chrome covers on a wooden comb (Marine Band) but sometimes you don't want that sort of sound anyway and it's not $40. BUT it's in tune with itself, it blows cleanly, and it works very-very well. The scale is accurate and the system matches the other Richter system harps. It's definitely capable of being a learning tool for anyone that wants to learn harmonica on a major budget and/or wants a harp that easily tolerates living in a shirt pocket through the great outdoors. Anyone that plays harmonica should own one of these to use as an example of "you don't have to spend $100s in order to make music" and should probably have a bag full to hand to the little-ones that want to salivate on your good harps. Anyone wanting to learn harmonica but not wanting to sink but a few dollars in will be able to learn the basics on it. A serious beginner will outgrow it's capabilities very fast and will want a Marine Band, Special 20, Blues Harp level pretty soon but those tinkering around will be pretty happy with it. And, if it ends up living the rest of its life in a drawer, you're only out $4. It is 1000% percent better than any unusable toy you'll find at the dollar/department store because it's a real harmonica capable of real music. Hint: 4 blow is DO. The scale pattern in 4 blow, 4 draw, 5 blow, 5 draw, 6 blow, 6 draw, 7 draw, 7 blow. C D E F G A B C [if you happen to want to play a tune on it] It blows crossharp in G. Attn parents of small children: The manufacturer has noted on it "this is not a toy" because it's not. There are some tiny parts in there. It's not a marketing slogan - that's a real brass reed plate with real brass reeds inside that plastic body.

Colorful Plastic Hohner,
By Bluz Suns "Special20" (Alabama, United States) - See all my reviews

I bought one of these a few years back in Austria for 4 Euros: expensive! As another reviewer said, it plays like a low end Hohner, a little leaky and a little quiet. I prefer the Hohner Special 20. But the plastic harp is lightweight, and I keep it in my bicycle bag. I have been invited to play along on a blues street jam, and I pulled that thing out an could play fairly well. The cover isn't quite smooth, and I don't like that, but it is a good harp in a pinch.

Don't let the colorful, toy-like appearance of this harmonica fool you. It comes with a label reminding you that "this is a musical instrument, not a toy", and such it is: a standard-size, 10-hole diatonic in the key of "C". It's made from mostly plastic, but is of sturdy construction, and relatively light in weight. The reeds and screws are brass. The reeds aren't absolutely pitch-perfect, but sound good. It comes with a rather thin and cheap transparent vinyl pouch for storage.It was playing one of these instruments (as an adult) that got me excited about learning the harmonica. I've since bought one for each of my children, and they love them. All things considered, this is a good harmonica for the price. If you need an inexpensive harmonica to try out, carry around, or give to a child who's interested in the harmonica, one that you won't make you scream if it accidentally gets damaged, this is the one for you.

I love this harmonica! I'm 16 and I bought a regular hohner one when I was 15. I kind of broke my first one and it costs like $25 so I bought this one because it's way cheaper. Even though it's for kids, I really think that it's good for any age. The holes are kind of smaller but they'd do good. :) I really love it. I didn't want to let my 4-year old brother to use my old one because you're not supposed to and it's too expensive. When he saw this new one, he totally freaked out. I'm going to buy another one for his 5th birthday! I hope we'll get a blue one this time (because it's my favorite color) so I can give this green one to him. hahaha (;

Harmonica good cheep and YELLOW as requested. I was worried about the color as they don't have an option for that but I emailled them and they sent the one I wanted. Quickly too. As I can not play the harp I can not opin about the quality but I LIKE it.

I got several of these harmonicas -- one for my toddler and extras to give out as gifts so there would be no fights over who gets to play with it. My 17 month old daughter loves it. She knows to blow on it but cannot quite make the music work -- though she enjoys trying. My 10 year old nephew loves his, too. It is a great toy or party favor.

I got this harmonica for my son on his birthday along with other musical instruments. It appears to be a standard harmonica, but I was very surprised at how nice it sounds, especially for the price! It's nice and heavy and durable. I remember having a harmonica when I was a kid and it used to clog up and such, but this is very easy to use and hasn't clogged up yet. It's surprising that after buying multiple instruments, including a somewhat pricey keyboard, my son prefers to play this inexpensive harmonica. :) I would highly recommend this for any child OR adult.
