I bought this little drum for my eight month old along with a few other small, quality instruments. I've never has a tone, or tongue drum before so I wasn't sure what to expect.I wanted to offer him some music making options while avoiding cheap, plastic, or battery operated junk. This drum is attractive, seems well built and makes a sort of soft, warm sound that kind of reminds me of wooden wind chimes when played on with a light touch. I enjoy tapping the drum along the grooves to experiment with the varying tones. I'm not musically educated in the least, but I think the range is pretty limited. Looking around online, the "real" tone drums seem to have a lot more range and are also quite expensive, so this is fine for our purposes. My little boy is interested in the drum and will tap it occasionally with his fat beat sticks that I purchased separately. I put the rubber tipped mallet that came with the drum away until I feel it would not be hazardous. Right now he loves chewing on sticks while standing precariously as he contemplates whatever it is that an eight month old thinks about. This gave me visions of all sorts of exaggerated potential calamities so for my piece of mind we will just tap the drum with our hands or fatter sticks for now which works just fine.

My drum says it's made in India. The black at the top and bottom of the sides is a ribbon which is not finished off very well. It was unraveling right away.

I would buy this again and would buy more from Hohner.
