I bought this baby bell for my then-4 months old, and received the green-yellow one. At first she just looked at it, then she put it in her mouth. I would model shaking it: in front of her, above, to the left and to the right - to develop her sense of hearing and space. Now at 7 months she can shake it herself.
This bell has a nice soft ring to it. I tried another bell whose ring was too shrill for my liking. The bell part is metal, inside a plastic casing, so your child does not come in contact with it. the casing has holes, so if you need to rinse it water can drain out easily (let in completely dry to prevent rust).
The surface can be wiped easily.
So far it has held up pretty well.

I bought these for both my 11 month old and as a Xmas gift for 8 and 6 month old friends. All three infants really enjoy shaking their bells (when they aren't chewing on them). My daughter enjoying shaking along with the radio, and the bell doesn't annoy me through the day. The bell gets banged against all the furniture, and thus far, it has held up very well.
