Hohner 150th,
By Bluz Suns "Special20" (Alabama, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hohner 150th Anniversary Harmonica (Electronics)
I received this harp as a gift an was very pleasantly surprised about its excellent quality. I recently bought a Steven Tyler harp to practice with, and that was leaky and cheap, Chinese made. This one's MUCH better. Airtight. Cool see-thru comb. I am more of a Special 20 player, but I love this harp. I don't think Hohner wanted to make a cheapo for their commemorative harp. I was in Trossingen, Germany at the factory museum and almost bought the same harp, it probably cost 60 euros. This is a great harp and a great price. Wish it came in all keys. The box is cool too, with a spring-loaded latch, natch. You can't beat this deal.

I have no musical ability what so ever, but a desire. On a whim I picked this up from a gold box lightning deal and love it. A harmonica is harmonious by design so I really can't mess it up and my dogs love it too! I picked up "Harmonica for Dummies" Harmonica For Dummies (For Dummies (Sports & Hobbies)) and almost feel like I can play an instrument. It's a great feeling. The harmonica sounds great, easily playable, and is just a lot of fun.

The first time I play a harmonica was 60 years ago and it was an Hohner. At 76 years old I got turn on with Amazon special of the day and bought it, I start to play, but after all these year I got too, too rusty and have start from the begining. But I must say I do like it and it sounds very good.

I ordered this for my husband at Christmas. As an ecelctic music lover with little time in his life to practice a musical instrument, this seemed perfect. He really liked it. After all, you blow in or out of it and nice sounds come forth. He blows during TV shows and movies (when we're alone) and finds it relaxing. Yes, there are lots of people who are really good and it takes skill, but it's fun for anyone. We were also surprised to know Hohner harmonicas are made about an hour from where we are living. Who knew?Neither of us will ever be any good, but this harmonica's well made, it's fun, sturdy and a great collection piece. I may look at another so we can both play badly together.

I guess I'll stand apart on this one. I did get a good price relative to current listings, but I don't feel that I got my money's worth (~$40). I found that the edges of the outer housing are very sharp and depending on how you hold this it can scratch. The tone is so-so at best compared to my Lee Oskar (which cost less ~$33). The box looks fairly nice in photos, but I found it to look and feel cheaply made. It seems that this must be the "budget" model of the 150th anniversary harp, as I now have dound that there are gold and chrome versions which are packaged differently and cost considerably more. If you're considering this, do yourself and buy the Diatonic Lee Oskar harmonica instead.Seller did a great job. My only complaint is with Hohner.

I bought this as a Gold Box deal for my 5-year-old daughter. I thought I'd enjoy hearing harmonica music more than some of the noisy "music" toys and I was totally right. Even without training the music comes out sounding pleasant. Without any help, she quickly noticed the numbers for the different holes and starting figuring out ways to play a few songs that she knows. It is quite durable (as it is used as a toy in my house) and has a very nice sound. At some point I am probably going to have to buy another one for my 3-year-old who also enjoys blowing on it and figuring out how to make music.
