This review is from: Hohner Nova Chromatic Accordion 96 Bass C System, Red (Electronics)
The accordion arrived damaged and am waiting for an exchange. 3 buttons fell off in the soft box and a dent on the reed section. Hopefully the second time around Amazon does a better job. The instrument looks well made. But the 3 buttons in found in the soft box aren't exactly top quality plastics to begin with. The construction is "thin" to say the least. I have a second hand Russian Bayan, the wax are falling off from the inside, but the buttons and bases are rock solid! As to the sound of this Hohner, it's bright and strong. The bass side is sort light and hollow, guess that has to do with the size and construction of the instrument. At 17lb, it feels bigger and heavier. At close to 2k, it's not cheap, as an 'entry level' Hohner. Blame the cheap dollar, what else? This model is supposed to be made in China. But it's the packaging (in Indiana according to the shipping label) that ruined this otherwise beautiful instrument. What a shame!
Update 2011-08-29 The replacement just came in and did a thorough check because of the first experience. The packaging is much improved this time and no apparant damage. But the B flat is missing a bass reed - only sounds when opening the bellow. On compressing the bellow only quiet air blows. The reed seems to be dead or stuck or sealed by glue or something. The other lower bass notes also seem to be difficult to play when only the bass register is down. This is not the case with the other Nova III 96 that came damaged with 3 missing buttons. On that one all remaining buttons work beautifully with no hickups. It seems to indicate a quality control problem at the factory. I also noticed that the shipping boxes actually bear Hohner name, instead of UPS/FedEx. However, the first time it came with a thin Amazon.com box ... But either way, it's sad to return for refund because I really love the design/weight/action/sound of this Hohner. I simply couldn't find another on the market like it. So after some tinkering: opening back panel and close, the front cover and close, etc, suddenly the reed opened and everything just worked! So I'll keep the accordion and hope it'll last me sometime... Also, I am surprised that no review on this or most other accordions on Amazon. Maybe I am the only one who got two defects in a row? I did notice that almost immediately after I bought my first one, the price went up by about $300 and is currently out of stock. So somebody else must be buying and happy with it. One other thing I'd love to point out is how responsive and effective the Amazon customer service staff is. They responsed to me almost immediately after I reported the first defect with clear and concrete steps to address the problem. It took them very little time to send the replacement out even before I return the first one. They also refunded the return shipping cost in no time. The best customer service ever as I have experienced anywhere. Really appreciate their help!
