If you want to play rock or country on the harmonica, this is a great set. Most people start out on cheap harmonicas in "C". The problem is, the songs on the radio you want to play are probably in a different key. Plus, those harps are nearly IMPOSSIBLE to get good, fluid, consistant bends on. When I discovered the Special 20, my playing improved immediately. Now, you can get the most useful keys in a very high quality harmonica that beginners and pros both love.

The "G" is great for Classic Rock. Its the key you need for "Heart of Gold", "Mary Jane's Last Dance", "Train Train" (the intro)as well as many country songs like Waylon Jennings "Lonesome, Onry and Mean"

The "A" is the key used on "Train, Train" (the solos), "Atlantic City", "On the Road Again" (Willie Nelson) as well as any blues in the key of "E". It is also the harp used on "Road House Blues" and "On the Road Again" (Canned Heat's version), but you have to retune two reeds to get the right sound for those two.

The "C" is the harp used in most instructional methods. It also the key Billy Joel uses on "Piano Man", and is great for jamming with country songs in the key of G.

So if THAT is the kind of music you want to play on harmonica, get this set. Then add a Special 20 in "D"... And "F"...and Bb...

---------- Buyer Beware:
This is a fancy box containing the same harmonicas as the:
"Hohner Special 20 Harmonica 3 piece Pro Pack keys of G,C,A"
Check the prices of both items before choosing which to buy. The only difference between the two is the packaging.

At the time I wrote this review, there was a $20 difference between the two on Amazon (This package is more expensive). This may vary over time depending on promotions.

----------Note on which key to buy first:
The selection of keys: G, C, A is not exactly the one I would recommend for complete beginners.
--I recommend starting with a key of C.
This is the accepted standard since most beginner songs and lessons will all be in C. One harmonica is fine as a beginner.
--Then in this order: D, A.
A is common in blues and country. D is also common and often considered easier to play than the C (the 2-draw should be easier)
--Then F, G, Bb, E,...
I would argue for the last 4 in this order, but here is gets more debatable. Of course, there are even more keys and variations beyond the ones listed. Feel free to add your opinion, since this tends to vary between players.

----------Hohner Special 20:
-(****_) overall: My preferred beginner harmonica, recommended to anyone as a first harmonica, and to experienced players who want the best harmonica at this price point. Anything less expensive will lack in quality and be difficult to play, which could turn off an aspiring player. It's good enough that many experienced players will never find a need to spend more on a harmonica. Not rated higher because you get what you pay for, and my preferred harmonicas are in the higher price range.
-(****_) Sound: Excellent. Loved it, and one of its strongest point.

Do I really need other keys?... most definitely!

Every day I find something new musically because I can compare songs on each harp. That's the real benefit to the 3-pack, you can really get interesting insights into playing songs and music choices.

The real question is whether to try with cheaper harps first?... That's a matter of preference, but I have NO regrets going with the Special 20 pack (G,C,A).

Like most, I started with the key of C (hohner Hot Metal) which got me hooked. After reading reviews, I got a Special 20 in C and the difference was noticeable - clearer tone, much easier to bend, but also a bit more difficult because subtle shifts will change tone (which soon becomes an advantage.) By the way, the special 20's definitely have more vibrato on the 1-3 holes... I have 4 and they are consistent in this -- the nice thing is that you can control it through the air pressure you provide

I'm not a musician but enjoy playing music as I feel like it. I try a range of songs from folk, blues, pop, classical as well as improv. Many songs "sort of" work but there's often a note or three that just seems off (diatonic harps are necessarily limited). Out of curiosity, if I look up the song online (title + "key") I find that the songs with "off" notes are usually in a different key.

So when I went to get a back-up special 20 I considered whether to get the 3 pack (I was certain I wanted C, but really debated how much I would use the others...)

Very glad I did. Given my experience was only with a C (and most of the songs I had learned) the other keys initially sounded odd. With experimenting I found some "C" songs become more interesting played in A or G (not to mention "cross harp" tunings).

as one could expect when buying a prepackaged 3-pack, there's a good chance one of the three might not have been purchased if bought seperately. in this case it was the A harmonica. that being said, the harps are very nice. play easily, and bending notes is super sweet.
