Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2. Hamanaka's festive, lively illustrations and a text laid out in an assortment of colors and type sizes reflect the inherent fun of this favorite song. Colorful blocks border each page, beginning with the front endpapers, where they frame musical notes on a yellow background. As the song progresses and the pace becomes more frenetic, the blocks start to fall off the border, eventually collapsing into a colorful heap of squares and musical notes. The illustrations, painted in bright acrylics, show a group of enthusiastic, multicultural children acting out the words. With each verse, the body part in question, such as foot or hand or hip, is in the foreground of the picture, jumping out from the side of the page. The music is included. Unfortunately, the book lacks a story and that limits its appeal and the number of ways it can be used with children. Simply presenting the lyrics does not produce as successful a picture book as those that feature songs with more of an inherent plot, such as Aliki's Hush Little Baby (S & S, 1972), Raffi's Baby Beluga (Crown, 1990), or Tom Paxton's Going to the Zoo (Morrow, 1996). Despite its shortcomings, libraries with a high demand for musical materials will find a place for this attractive entry.?Jane Marino, Scarsdale Public Library, NY

From Booklist

Ages 3^-8. Whether the lively pictures depict the action from straight on, from the side, from above, or from below, children will see characters dancing the hokey pokey with full-bodied involvement and having a grand time. Brightly colored and unabashedly cheerful, this picture-book version of a song popular since the late 1900s is bound to get an enthusiasic response. Young readers will undoubtedly take note of the many visual details--from the characters' clothes, hairstyles, and shoes to the humorous variety of animals that gradually join the energetic group (some to dance, others to look for dinner). Although they may not notice the girl who resembles her French poodles or the hungry cats eyeing pet fish, they will surely find a character who looks just like they do. Words and music are included, as is a brief background note regarding the song and the dance. Karen Morgan

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes you want to dance!, August 26, 2009
This review is from: The Hokey Pokey (Hardcover)
Sheila Hamanaka's visual rendering of the classic hokey pokey song is picture-perfect. First, a young girl puts her right foot in. She is accompanied by a cowboy for the left-foot. A redhead joins in for the right arm, and a young Asian girl and a cat for the left. Before you know it, a rousing, multi-ethnic, multi-species crowd is exuberantly shaking limbs. This book -- with the accompanying lyrics boldly printed on each page -- makes me want to sing and dance and join in the fun. And really, isn't that what it's all about?
