I am both a fine arts photographer and book designer. Seldom have I seen such a beautiful marriage of these two art forms! Unfortunately, Amazon's photograph promoting the book does not show that the book comes within a box, with flexible wooden boards in a three-piece binding. As someone who owns all of Kenna's books, this presentation of Hokkaido images is spectacular (though some have been published in previous books). Kenna cheerfully breaks all the usual rules regarding the importance of sun and shadow and, instead, heads out during and after storms in order to capture the luminous quality of sky, sea, and land. He concentrates on the drama of simplicity, silence, mood, and loneliness, with exquisite sensitivity to graphic composition. "Hokkaido" is one of the finest productions and compilations of the year!

I received this book yesterday and ablsolutly love it. To echo a previous reviewer the item description on Amazon doesn't make it clear that this book is presented in a sleek black slipcase and, more importantly, the covers of the book itself are made of real wood. The book is printed on thick, what looks and feels like, watercolor paper. The images are beautiful and witty. This is definately one of my favorite books in my collection.

The images are beautifully composed and executed. Many of the images show a tension between "man-inflicted" and the natural, yet these elements coexistand form a wonderful whole.

I ordered two books for xmas, one a young adult novel(thick and small), the other an expensive large format volume (fine art book). Both books were packed together with nothing to separate them. They were shrink wrapped together with the smaller book on top.THe art book had a matt black finish which was damaged by the book on top. I gave the gift anyway as the pages inside were in good condition, and the damage was to the slipcase not the volume itself (and there was no time to get a replacement for xmas). I would suggest in future that an isolating layer of cardboard be placed between the two books to prevent this occurance.
