3.0 out of 5 stars just ok
Just bought this from my local sew-vac dealer for $73. On tile/hard floors, the major advantage is speed of pick-up and it saves the bending-over associated with a dustpan/broom. Picks up larger particles ok (cheerios, crumbs, etc), but the fine dust, sand, and hair is harder to remove. The old broom (with polyester bristles) does a better job on the dust and fine...

The picture shown on the screen isn't exactly what I got in the mail.

Aside from the spacial dimensions being the same, the color is different,

and mine says "HOKY PR 3000" instead of "HOKY, by Oreck". It doesn't matter, because this thing is a marvel in action! It picks up everything in sight, plus most of what you don't see. It uses an 8 flapped rolling pin, having tiny treaded dots on them, to swipe away even heavier or coarse uneven objects, like coins and popcorn. In action, I'd have to guess it works just as well as any electric vacuum.

As on all Hokys, there are 2 foldable dust compartments (on this model being spring loaded) slightly accessible to each other inside. The dust can be deposited in either one, depending on which direction you vacuum.

The 3 foot long aluminum handle comes in segmented parts. In action, it can lower fully flat against the vacuum head to reach low crevices. The 4 vinyl wheels are spaced close together, and provide better traction than plastic. Also, there are 4 small horsehair brushes at each corner, covering the 2" gaps that the rolling pin can't touch. When combined, they clean the whole length of the vacuum head.

As a complete package, I give this machine 5 well-earned stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hoky PR3000- Can't live without it., May 8, 2008

This review is from: Hoky Carpet Sweeper - 12 1/2"Wx3 1/2"Dx11"L (Kitchen)
I first used one of these back in the eighties, and later wanted one. After installing hardwood floors and adding a couple of area rugs I needed something quiet, and efficient. I remembered one of my sister's gifts at her wedding shower-went on a search on my favorite-Amazon, and there it was. I have had it quite a while and it is easy to take apart. It is easy to clean. I have had no problems, no breakage, and would reccommend it to anyone. What is so appealing to me is that once it is full of hair-(two women in the house) the roller will come out. The ends of it come off and with them the hair ready to be disposed of in the trash. Slide the ends back into place. The bottom opens easily and what you see is a shock. No electricity. The roller can be washed or rinsed off , just make sure to remove the ends of the roller and place them in a safe location until it is dry and ready to be assembled. I have two indoor pets, and it lifts pet hair perfectly. It is so nice also not having to drag out my old vacuum cleaner so much. It is great for someone with back problems.

It's a bit more effective on carpet. Good for use between vaccuumings. Although, it didn't pick up the flower petals my kids scattered all over the carpet.

I bought this product based on the first review on here. And they were right, it cleans beautifully. Easy to assemble, easy to use, picks up just about anything, like any good vacuum cleaner. I never would have thought that I'd pay $85.00 for a carpet sweeper; but I needed one that was the next best thing to using a vacuum cleaner, and it has worked out just great. Shipping is slow. It took them a week and a half before they shipped it, but arrived a week after they shipped it. This is because, I guess, the product was shipped from the manufacturer, but I'm not complaining. The sweeper has met my expectations, and I am one satisfied customer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb product for those cleanups between a major vacuuming - 5 stars+++!!!, March 27, 2008
This review is from: Hoky Carpet Sweeper (Kitchen)
I use my heavy Hoover self-propelled vacuum once or twice a week. It does a superb job deep-cleaning and lifting the fibres of my carpets. At all other times between vacuuming I use the Hoky (what a misnomer!!!) for cleanups.

Over the years, I have tried many other types of "mini-cleaners" including several rechargeable and 120 volt. These include stick cleaners and hand-held cleaners, several with power nozzles.

Cleanup varies from poor to adequate with all of these. AND the rechargeable batteries never seem to last very long until they will not hold a decent charge - then the batteries cost as much as the whole cleaner to replace. Also 120v cleaners require a convenient outlet and their power cords to be released then rewound after use. The ones with small dirt containers need to be emptied and their small filters usually need to be brushed off and washed after each use if their (often feeble) suction is to remain effective.

The Hoky is always ready to use and does a first rate job of picking up all regular debris tracked in the house - including pet hair and fur. It works equally well on wood floors, laminate floors, ceramic tiles and carpeting - picking dirt up in one pass and requiring minimal effort to push (unless carpet pile is particularly plush). It will even clean wet floors - instead of a brush, it has a "RotorBlade" (a spindle with rubber squeegees) - which works well for small liquid spills. Emptying the 2 dirt pans is very straightforward; there are no filters to clog and the rotorblade seems to clean itself of hair and fur.

One Hoky and one heavy vacuum (per floor maybe?) is all you need to keep your floors free of dirt and debris at all times with minimal effort. None of the other "mini cleaners" I have used have done a better job AND all of them are less convenient.

Just remember to park the Hoky horizontally (or empty it before parking it) to avoid dumping dirt next time you start to use it. OR wait until the next "unbeliever" needs a demonstration. Just one or two passes and it will all be picked up again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money, March 25, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

We purchased the Orek based on the reviews. All I can say is save your money. A 5.00 pan and broom does a better job, and faster. We have hardwood floors and area carpets, figured it would do the job on at least one of them. It does not do either one very well. If you don't mind going over the same area 5-6 times then you'll love it. I don't have that kind of time to waste.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor customer service from GoVacuum - beware!, July 26, 2008
By
Rachel (Boston, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hoky Carpet Sweeper (Kitchen)
GoVacuum sent the wrong carpet sweeper - the Restauranteur instead of the Hoky. I tried it out, and for $84.00, it is pretty mediocre in how well it grabs carpet, picks up hair, etc. and not worth the money. There were no return instructions in the box, and so worried that by sending it back without alerting them, would not get a proper refund. So I called customer service, and left a voice mail during office hours but got no call back. I called again a week or so later, left voice mail, no response. Have kept calling, but the company has not returned any calls. They sent an email through Amazon saying that they wanted to provide outstanding customer service, and if there were any problems to please respond (they mentioned something about having noted that I'd called customer service). Sent a detailed email in response (which is also copied to Amazon), but nothing came of it. So now will have to take it up with the credit card company. This has been two months of waiting for what is a reasonable request - a refund, or in the beginning, a correction. Very shoddy customer service! Please be cautious.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Quick Clean-Ups, August 25, 2008
This review is from: Hoky Carpet Sweeper - 12 1/2"Wx3 1/2"Dx11"L (Kitchen)
The product is excellent for quick clean-ups of area rugs & carpets. This is not meant to replace a good vac, but rather to provide an easy way to spruce up your digs in-between. Note that the item does not arrive under the Hoky moniker, but has been replaced by the Oreck name.

1.0 out of 5 stars disapointing purchase, March 2, 2009
This review is from: Hoky Carpet Sweeper (Kitchen)
Don't waste your money like I just did. My dog brings in dry leaves after playing in the backyard. I had an "ah-hah moment" remembering the Hoky I used as a teenager to pick up popcorn in the lobby of the theater I worked in. This Hoky Restaurateur doesn't work at all like it's predecessor. I chased leaves around the hard and carpeted surfaces until they were crumbled all over the edges of the floor. I got the vacuum out to clean up in two minutes what I had just chased around with my new Hoky for 20 minutes. You might want to advertise this as a piece of exercise equipment.

1.0 out of 5 stars GoVacuum, January 17, 2009
By
This review is from: Hoky Carpet Sweeper (Kitchen)
I too ordered the Oreck Hoky from GoVacuum only to receive the Restrauteur. The dimensions and most of the functionality is the same but definitely a lower end sweeper. I called GoVacuum and they do not even have the 'HOKY' by Oreck so if you order from them you will get the cheaper model. I was offered to ship it back and may do that but I advised the GoVacuum guy he was showing the HOKEY and he should change the offer on Amazon.com as it was deceiving people. Amazon.com needs to follow-up with this company and I would strongly encourage you to not purchase any item from this company.
