Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2?"Spanish is fun,/ so give it a try./ Hola is hello,/ adios is good-bye." So begins this catchy introduction to some basic vocabulary. The almost-musical rhymes resemble a commercial jingle and facilitate learning. The Spanish terms are printed in bold throughout the text, along with plenty of visual clues, to make it easy for youngsters to decipher them. A glossary of the 70 words with pronunciations and the English equivalent is provided. However, since the pronunciation guide appears at the end, the book is best suited for reading aloud by a person already familiar with the language. The colorful cartoons are adequate, but often awkwardly drawn. Lynn Reed's Pedro, His Perro, and the Alphabet Sombrero (Hyperion, 1995) is similar in scope.?Maria Redburn, Irving Public Library, TX

From Booklist

Ages 4-9. "Spanish is fun, / so give it a try. / `Hola' is hello, / `adios' is good-bye." In such singsong, Dr. Seuss-style rhymes, more than 70 Spanish words are introduced either directly or through usage. In purple, hot pink, melon, and turquoise, the exuberant gouache and colored pencil illustrations are flooded with creamy southwestern hues. Together, text and illustrations create a fiesta of lively language fun, perfect for spicing up a story hour or sneaking in a first Spanish lesson. A Spanish language teacher for 10 years, the author hasn't forgotten to include a glossary and pronunciation guide at the end. Annie Ayres

More About the Author

Susan Middleton Elya grew up near Des Moines, Iowa, went to college 35 miles away, and then left her state to teach in the middle-of-nowhere Nebraska. She wanted to teach 3rd grade but ended up teaching high school Spanish instead (due to her double degree from Iowa State University). After 8.5 years of teaching in the Midwest, she moved to San Diego to get married and ended up teaching Spanish to native speakers in Ramona, California. Then a move with her husband to the Bay Area left her jobless, with a new baby, and with plenty of time to write. She started submitting stories for publication in 1988 and finally struck gold with Say Hola to Spanish, a nonfiction picture book from Lee & Low, in 1994. Now, 26 titles later, Elya is working on novels, as well. She has two grown children and one nearly-grown child, and still loves to make up stories, do school visits, and remember what it was like to be a kid. She also has an antiques and book store in Danville, California, where she sells autographed copies of her books. Check it out at www.thepolkadotattic.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Say Bravo to Hola!, July 25, 2001

Daniel L. Berek (Flanders, NJ, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Say Hola to Spanish (Paperback)
Do you need a book that will delight children from 5 to 13? "Say Hola! to Spanish" did exactly that for my students, from kindergarten through grade 8 - er, ocho. Children of all ages (and that includes this middle-aged teacher of Spanish) will delight to the likes of the following: "Your hair is your pelo, your nose is nariz. Your grandmother's pelo is probably gris." "Bread is called pan and cheeses are quesos. That's what we eat, but perros eat huesos." Learning foreign words could not be more fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars My niece loved this!, April 26, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Say Hola to Spanish (Paperback)
I had seen this book in the bookstore, but I had resisted buying it because it doesn't use the Spanish articles. However, after my niece kept repeating the 10-15 Spanish words she learned at school and from watching Dora the Explorer, I realized that this book would be great for her (and my sister/her mom who doesn't speak any Spanish). The first time I read it to her, she repeated every verse back to me--on her own, I did not ask her to do it. I think this will help her learn quite a few more Spanish words.
