Book Description

Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art May 11, 2005
One of the greatest artists of sixteenth-century Europe, Hans Holbein the younger earned high acclaim for his work both in the city of Basel and in England for Henry VIII and other patrons. This book is the first to explore the full range of the artist’s English body of work as well as the relation of this work to the visual and material culture of Tudor England. Providing a detailed account of the paintings, drawings, and woodcuts that Holbein produced in England, the book demonstrates convincingly that that country was not as remote from a common European culture as is often assumed. Rather, it was an unmistakable part of that culture.
Susan Foister discusses not only Holbein's well-known portraits but also his decorative paintings and murals, now lost, his designs for goldsmiths, and the works that can be associated with the English Reformation. In addition, she considers Holbein's religious and secular images, his techniques and practices, his status as an official court painter, and a variety of other intriguing topics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Holbein, England and Dr. Foister, January 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Holbein and England (Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art) (Hardcover)
In the career of Hans Holbein the younger (a recent monograph of his father, Hans Holbein d.Ä. has been written by Elsbeth Wiemann and published by Hatje Kantz, ISBN-13: 978-3775727167) England was the Heaven. He made works of great beauty and was recognized like a star among masters. The book is magnificent: reproduction are of the highest quality, almost all the paintings have been cleaned and restored and the competence of Susan Foister assist us with unique mastership on the subject. He was the official painter of the king (Henry VIII). During the English period the art of Holbein reached the extreme. Volumes and surfaces are neat with great equilibrium in composition. "Holbein and England" is a tour-de-force of the Yale University Press art department. If you expect a book for experts this is what Dr. Foister made but it is readable, full of technical insights. Wide the historical scene. Drawing or painting are discussed in depth, fully referenced: Foister made clear from the start that there is a urgent need for scientific reconstruction of the work of Holbein. And she established solid foundations for subsequent works always with prose clear and fluent. The best monograph on Holbein.
