Book Description

October 31, 1999 Great Painters
Hans Holbein the Younger was born in Augsburg in 1497/98. He died in London in 1543, having been honoured with the title of painter to King Henry VIII. His talent was established at the early age of 18 when he illustrated Erasmus' manuscript, The Praise of Folly.

After fleeing the Reformation, Holbein spent over two years in London, where he was welcomed by Thomas More. Under More's patronage, he acquired an outstanding reputation as a portrait painter. Holbein contributed to the illustrations in the first edition of Utopia. Holbein's specialty was anamorphosis, teasing the viewer's vision with a sense of humour. Even today his subtle innuendo comes over with a big "wink." Holbein painted numerous portraits of humanists, bishops, merchants and bankers, as well as of Henry VIII and his wives. Outstanding examples of his portraiture are the Darmstadt Madonna, the portrait of Henry VIII, the Cartellino, the portrait of Bonifacius Amerbach and, of course, the famous Ambassadors.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Hans Holbein the younger is well known as a 16th-century portraitist and court painter to Henry VIII. Zwingenberger (Schiele, Parkstone, 1999) uses his double portrait The Ambassadors as the centerpiece of an exploration of meaning in Holbein's art, broadening her discussion to include other Holbein paintings and woodcut illustrations as well as consideration of the cultural context in which Holbein worked. This volume will be most useful to a scholarly audience because it employs certain technical terms without defining them, leaves some Latin and German phrases untranslated, and makes frequent reference to the opinions of previous scholars.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Extremely Nice Book on Holbein, May 29, 2007
This review is from: Holbein (Great Painters Series) (Hardcover)
This is an extremely nice (and LARGE) book on Holbein the Younger. Filled with large, full color plates. No art lover can afford to be without one at these great, used prices. Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) was one of the greatest portrait painters of the 16th. Century. He was the court painter of Henry VIII. He was a painter of religious subjects as well, and there is a large two-page spread of his startling Christ in the Tomb. An exceptional bargain.

Invest your money in a better Holbein book. A lot of images were b&w, plus many color copies were pixelated. A few are so low quality that it made me check out the info on the publisher to make sure I didn't get some black market unauthorized book. If you love and respect Holbein's work, spend a little more money and get a different book.
