Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Brogan's sophomore contemporary (after Crazy Little Thing) successfully blends a sassy heroine and humor with deep emotional issues and a traditional romance. Suddenly jobless with her relationship on the rocks, event planner Libby Hamilton moves back to her small hometown to live with her happy, chaotic family. Perfect older sister Ginny is married and pregnant, wild younger sister Marti is engaged, and Dad is turning a historic one-room schoolhouse into an ice-cream parlor—using Libby's savings. Working with her father, Libby meets Tom Murphy, a restoration specialist. On the darker side of the story, Tom is mourning the death of his wife, killed in a car accident a year ago in which he was behind the wheel. Unable to move on, Tom struggles to maintain relationships with his teen daughter and his wife's parents. The contrast between Tom's genuine pain and the lighthearted conflicts in Libby's family can feel odd, but the well-developed characters and the sweet story with just a touch of heat will please readers looking for a creative take on romance.

From Library Journal

Fired from her Chicago job because of a misdirected email, dumped by her longtime boyfriend, and caught up in her father's crazy plan to turn a dilapidated historical schoolhouse into an ice cream parlor, event planner Libby Hamilton's life is in shreds. Tom Murphy, a widowed restoration contractor who's working on the building, isn't doing much better. With grief and guilt over the accident that killed his wife and a rebellious teenage daughter weighing him down, Tom has no time for anything but work—until persistent Libby takes an interest. VERDICT Launched in hilarious style by an embarrassingly cute meet, this delightful romantic comedy will keep the smiles coming. Brogan (Highland Surrender) is a current RITA Award nominee for her earlier Crazy Little Thing. She lives in Michigan.

"This was just the type of thing to happen around the Hamilton Family. Tom should have known the day couldn't go by without some sort of mishap. Their luck was nearly as bad as his. If there was an abandoned well around, one of them was bound to fall in."

This observation made by the hero of the book gives a pretty accurate glimpse of the most-of-the-time (comedically) disaster prone but all-of-the-time colorful family of the heroine.

Libby Hamilton finds herself back home with her family after a disastrous end to her promising corporate career in Chicago. She is fired as a result of a dreaded mistaken 'reply all' email wherein she disparages her boss. Jobless, she moves back into her old room until she can regroup.

In the meantime her father, a retired high school history teacher with an encyclopedic level trivia knowledge of the mating habits of various members of the animal kingdom and a dismal entrepreneurship record, has bought a broken down old one room school house to turn into an old fashioned Ice Creame Shoppe. Libby is drafted as his helper.

His contractor is Tom Murphy. He of the brawny arms and complicated relationship with a teenaged daughter. Tom is not much of a talker (but that is ok the Hamilton family talk enough for him) and he is overcoming some difficult times but he finds himself fascinated by Libby and drawn, despite himself, into the high comedic drama that seems to follow her family.

I had read Crazy Little Thing by this author and completely ADORED it! It was funny and snappy. And the family dynamics in that book were a hoot.

I've just read Hold On My Heart for a second time and am planning to re-read both of Brogan's other 2 books. I can't wait for her next one! I actually got to go to a book signing for Hold On My Heart and Brogan is just as charming and funny in real life as her characters are in her books. This is an author to watch!

Having absolutely loved "Crazy Little Thing" I immediately pre-ordered "Hold on my Heart" expecting the same level of enjoyment. Ms. Brogan writes intelligently and the story flowed well, the characters were likeable but I felt the humor was somewhat forced. This reads like a much more traditional romance novel than the last one, and I can't really say there's anything wrong with it except that the ending was quite abrupt. It simply lacked, for me, the spark immediate in "Crazy" that made it unputdownable. The love scenes were very nicely done, sexy and sensual. I didn't dislike this book, it just doesn't, in my opinion, stand out of the crowd as her last did.

When Chicago event planner Libby Hamilton loses her job and her fair-weather boyfriend in the same day, she's forced to move back home where her eccentric father just bought an old schoolhouse he wants to convert into an ice cream parlor. Things begin to look up, though, when widowed restoration specialist Tom Murphy shows up to help. Tom is sexy and quiet and tough, but can Libby break through his exterior and show him love is worth trying again?

I was amazed by how much I loved this book. This was a fabulous mix of hilarity and heart. Tom had me from the first time we saw him, and Libby's internal dialog had me rolling. The setting was sweet, the secondary characters added nicely to the story, and the romance was realistic and hot. Widows are always tough to work in, but Brogan did a great job. I love endings that you can both sigh at and find rationality. A book not to be missed!

I enjoy reading a book where the characters seem real and the story moves along well. Each character in this book was different. This story had a twist in it that was interesting. The male love interest had a teenage daughter, but he wasn't that old himself and he was a widower, rather than divorced. Those differences made for an intriguing love story that included very real counseling session scenes as he and his daughter worked through the grief process.
