Book Description

July 1, 2000
Geologist Kathleen Dawson went to the South American jungle in search of oil, but her guides are terrified of the Jaguar Man. Kathleen doesn't believe in the mythical shape-shifter who, according to legend, rules the jungle both as beast and man, protecting his territory against the outside world. Then Kathleen is drugged and awakens to find herself in a cave with a man named Guerriro who claims to be the Jaguar Man. He warns her to leave before it's too late. When morning arrives, Kathleen's back in camp and convinces herself the man and the cave were only a dream. However, her guides find a jaguar's skull on a pole, which is the Jaguar Man's warning that to stay means death. The frightened natives abandon Kathleen. Stranded in a rainstorm that quickly escalates into a flood, Kathleen fights for her life. She's saved by a black jaguar and again finds herself in Guerriro's cave. But as the days pass, Kathleen begins to wonder if Guerriro, who is both her captor and her savior, is really cursed to live his life as a black jaguar by day and a man by night. All Kathleen knows for sure is that Guerriro's ensnared her heart, and she'll do anything she can to stay by his side, even if doing so means she must...Hold Onto the Night.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Mythical Shape-Shifter Who Rules the Jungle . . . ., July 16, 2001
By
Carolyn Christy "Caro" (Fairhaven, Ma. United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hold Onto the Night (Paperback)
Hold Onto The Night by Shauna Michaels is a great paranormal romance.

Kathleen Dawson, geologist for the Dalco Oil Company, travels to a South America jungle. She is desperately trying to prove her worth to her father and sets out to find oil. Immediately, she feels that something isn't normal about the dark night. It is too quiet almost omnious and she can't shake the feeling that she is being watched. The guides who are travelling with her are very, very nervous. She had heard them whispering amongst themselves about the Jaguar Man. The guides are terrified of this mythical shape-shifter who rules the jungle both as a man and as a beast.

Kathleen is drugged and awakens to find herself in a cave with a mysterious man called Guerriro. She is afraid but at the same time, feels an attraction for this mysterious man. On some primative level, she desires him and is totally bewildered by the way her body is reacting to him.

Guerriro also feels desire for Kathleen but he reigns in on that desire unwilling to have her interfere with his duty to the people of the jungle. He tells her that he is responsible for the Jaquar Man myth and warns her to flee. She refuses, desperately needing to find oil in order to finally prove her worth to her father.

Kathleen's refusal to flee changes her fate forever.

She finds that her guides are missing, leaving her alone in a rain storm that soon becomes a flood. She is saved by a black jaguar and finds herself once again in Guerriro's cave.

Confronted with her growing feelings for him, Kathleen begins to question who he "really" is. What if he is really cursed to live his life as a jaguar by day and as a man by night? What will become of their growing feelings for each other if this turns out to be true?

Hold Onto The Night is an enjoyable read. Paranormal fans will not be disappointed as they unravel the mystery of the Jaguar Man.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic melding of passionate soul mates: WOW, May 5, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hold Onto the Night (Paperback)
Hold on to your seats! Heres a story that catapults you into a fast-paced adventure that never lets up. No leisurely read here. No time to savor the delicacies of a flowering romance. Hold on to the Night is a mainline express to primitive passion.

This Amazonian tale combines the raw animal force of nature with the unstoppable tides of passion. With page-turning anticipation this combination produces a mystical union of two compatible souls destined to be perfectly mated in this life and the eternal hereafter.

Paranormal romances provide a perfect venue for the ultimate erotic experience. A human male may give his beloved a natural high. But a supernatural male, a superman, a warlock, a Jaguar Man, ah, there is a male that could shake the very foundations of reality.

Hold on to the Night delivers! It takes you into the shadowlands of the heart, through the misty world of watery mansions, and ends in the surprised joy of soul mates fusing. Hold on to the Night offers the intrigue of a mystery, the fantasy of science fiction, the suspense of a thriller, and the emotional consummation of the best romance. Whats not to like?

Shanua Micheals is an author at the height of her powers. Her creative skills seem best put to use in the paranormal romance. The author takes great pains to demonstrate that the primal passion that fuels this story does not objectify the other into an interchangeable sex object. Both hero and heroine place the pleasure of the other ahead of their own. Each is willing to sacrifice his or her life for the other. This is pure romance.

If you think of a romance novel as a luxury automobile, this book exemplifies the red-hot engine that drives all romances (be they: runaway bride, marriage of convenience, amnesia, mistaken identity, secret baby, childhood crush, tomboy friend to lover, whatever). In this respect Hold on to the Night reminds me of Goethes The Sorrows of Young Werther which crystallized the very essence of the coming Romantic Movement in one short novel.

Aspiring romance authors should read this book early in their careers to see whats under the hood of romance. Everyone else may read it for the pure joy of experiencing excellence.

This review is from: Hold Onto the Night (Paperback)
This book was the first time I've ever read a paranormal romance and I am addicted. Not only is the story fast moving and oh so romantic but wonderfully erotic too. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a little escapism. If only a man like Gueirriro really did exsist!
