Book Description

After saving her three-year-old daughter from a car-jacking, off-duty police detective Jocelyn Rush ends up in the ER. The last person she expects to run into is Anita Grant, former prostitute and an old acquaintance from Jocelyn’s days on patrol. In spite of her obvious injuries—mutilated hands and feet—Anita refuses to talk about what happened. Reluctantly, Jocelyn backs off, and Anita's case goes to Philadelphia’s Special Victims Unit.

Before long, Jocelyn is pulled into the SVU’s investigation. Anita is finally ready to talk, but only to Jocelyn. Her story is harrowing, even to a seasoned veteran like Jocelyn. Working with SVU, Jocelyn’s investigation unearths a series of similar crimes going back four years. Three men are preying on local prostitutes, viciously assaulting and mutilating them.

The police apprehend two of the suspects, but the third eludes capture. As the hunt for the most sadistic of the three intensifies, and his crimes escalate, Jocelyn and her colleagues have precious few leads. Then a monster from Jocelyn’s past resurfaces. She doesn’t want to be reminded of the terrible secret that destroyed her family nearly twenty years earlier, but the man offers her a lead that could crack Anita’s case.

To solve it, Jocelyn must connect her past with her present—before a sadistic attacker sets his sights on her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Winner! March 22, 2014
By Pamela
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Lisa Regan ("Regan") is three-for-three. Once again Regan does not disappoint with her latest thriller "Hold Still," which is absolutely amazing. Regan delivers an intense, gritty, and suspenseful tale that flows smoothly, engaging the reader from beginning to end; with an array of characters, all of whom are fleshed out; the end result a well-written and engaging tale that is truly worth reading.

From the very start Regan hooks you in as Detective Jocelyn Rush ("Rush") chases after a carjacker that still holds her daughter in the backseat of the car. From there it's a non-stop thrill-ride that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Regan again delivers a strong protagonist with Rush. She's smart, confident, honest, and tough, and can give as good as she gets. We also see the side of her, a loving and caring mother, and friend to the few she considers family; at times revealing her vulnerability; and sometimes rage at the injustices of the world, which unfortunately has just landed her in anger management classes. You'd think someone like Rush would be cocky and arrogant, but she's not which is why you can't help but love and cheer for her.

I highly recommend this novel be read by those who love thrillers. And don't stop there. If you haven't read Regan's two previous novels, "Aberration" and "Finding Claire Fletcher," I highly suggest you read those as well. Congrats to Regan on another winner.

My review is over people. What are you waiting for? GO read her books! ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars A top class crime novel. March 26, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Jocelyn Rush is a character in whom I am happy to invest concern. Not too over-the-top tough, she is engaging, emphatic and compassionate. This book is a winner in every way. Well written, the plot grabbed and wafted me to the finish line without dropping a moment of interest along the way.

Yes, I did pick the bad bloke early in the piece, but this in no way spoiled this excellent story for me. The romance was realistic and touching. Regan brought all her characters to life, investing them with both good and bad qualities, even most of the evil doers.

Now I am hoping that this author is, right now, typing her fingers to the bone with a new book featuring Jocelyn and Anita chasing the crooks from their private investigation business!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tense, harrowing, and chillingly real! March 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
No one does creepy crime fiction better than Lisa Regan. I loved her protagonist, Jocelyn, especially her flaws. If only I could kick ass like she does quite literally. Yet as tough as she is, both as a cop and a protective mother to her young daughter, Jocelyn has some serious ghosts haunting her, and they manage to slither their way in during her toughest case, bringing full circle a family tragedy she has never really dealt with, all while investigating the most heinous crimes against women she's ever seen. Tense, harrowing, and chillingly real, Regan has woven yet another engagingly sinister tale that will leave your nerves on edge right up to the frightening end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspense & Realistic Characters Makes This A Winner March 21, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Jocelyn Rush is a Philly detective with an anger management problem. When her fuse blows she is apt to rough someone up, but only if she has proof they have truly committed the crime. She is not a "dirty cop", just a good cop with emotional baggage that makes her overly empathetic to victims. I like that Rush is portrayed as believably human, with a troubled past and flaws, as opposed to some of the current "superhero, kick-butt" female protagonists in books recently. She's fighting for the underdog and will give 110% to help them out. As prefaced in the blurb above, Det. Rush is dealing with two twisted criminals led by a psycho who likes to dominate women by nailing them to the floor before watching the other men rape her. This book deals with mature themes, so if you can't handle it or don't enjoy this type of suspense plot, then perhaps this is not for you. The violent scenes are not excessively graphic, just enough to further the plot. I didn't figure out some of the loose plot lines until the end, when it was all woven together in a satisfactory conclusion. There was never a lull in the action, no "middle-slump" that many detective-based stories suffer from.
Wonderful thriller, as always, from Ms. Regan--highly recommended!

This novel is the reason why I love to read!!! Both chilling and thrilling, Hold Still kept my attention through every twist and turn! I have not had the pleasure of reading Lisa Regan's other two novels, but I definitely think I will! I think we need a sequel!!! I can't wait for the next Regan novel!

I enjoy Ms. Regan's writing. She has strong women protagonists and keeps the suspense at just the right level. When I got started I couldn't put this book down. I wanted Jocelyn to be safe, but couldn't figure out who she could trust to help her. Very good thriller!

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked this story very much
I liked this story very much. The only thing I didn't like was all the times that God's name was used in vain. I don't like seeing that in a book or hearing it in person. Read more

Some predictability, but overall, a really good book. It was very easy to get attached to the characters, which is one thing that I look for in any book.

More About the Author

Lisa Regan was born in Philadelphia, a product of two large Irish Catholic families whose roots run deep in her neighborhood. From the moment she was able to put words onto the page, she was writing: poems, stories, and even novels. At age eleven, her parents bought her a typewriter, on which she wrote her first full-length novel. By the time she was eighteen, she had written four terrible young adult novels. Between eighteen and twenty-two, she had a crisis of confidence and although she kept writing, she was unable to finish any novel-length projects. She spent her time working in bookstores while completing college. She spent two years at the Community College of Philadelphia before transferring to Bloomsburg University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English and a master of education degree. To make ends meet, she worked as both a certified nurse assistant and a karate instructor. In 2002 she finally finished her first adult novel, which remains on a flash drive in her nightstand. In 2006, she finished what would become her first published novel: Finding Claire Fletcher. After being passed over by more than 150 agents and then more than a dozen publishers, her first novel was published in December 2012, followed by her second novel, Aberration, in June 2013. Finding Claire Fletcher won Best Heroine and was runner-up for Best Novel in the 2013 eFestival of Words Best of the Independent eBook Awards. It was a finalist for the Kindle Book Review's Best Kindle Book Awards in 2014. In December 2013, the novel reached number one on Amazon's Bestselling Kidnapping Crime Fiction list; in the same month, her second novel, Aberration reached number one on Amazon's Serial Killer Crime Fiction Bestseller list. Lisa currently resides in Philadelphia with her husband and daughter where she works full time and works on her future novels while waiting in line at the local post office.
