ethereal. magical. transporting me to a different corner of my mind with each new song i play. disclaimer: and not just because i know someone in the band. actually reconnected after discovering the album and researching the band. my ipod can barely keep up with the number of times i play this album, usually in its entirity. oh and the band, live, rocks.

A few weeks ago, I had never heard of Musee Mecanique. They're on a small label and they easily would have flown under my radar had I not seen this album reviewed on pitchfork. The album cover immediately caught my eye. It's been my experience that if I come across a new band with a good album cover, more often than not I've really liked that album.Pitchfork wasn't falling all over itself on this record, but the review was enough to make me check out the band's myspace page and I was hooked after two songs. Even better, I saw that the band was set to play a few miles away from me in a few weeks so I went out and bought the record so I could be as familiar as I could be with the songs. In the two weeks between buying the record and seeing them live, Hold this Ghost managed to work its way into the top five of my favorite records from last year, making me rethink the list. Musee Mecanique cover a lot of musical ground on this full length debut, but the record has a wonderful sense of cohesiveness to it. It's equal parts americana, folk, melancholia, country, and indie rock. Most of the songs rest on a foundation of mellow guitars and are fleshed out by all manner of keyboards, string arrangements, and electronic programming. Some songs lean a little heavier on electronics...like the first track (which is the best song Blonde Redhead never wrote), and others come across as more straightforward folk songs. Both of the chief songwriters share singing duties and the vocals are perfectly suited for the gentle songs on this album. This is the perfect record for a snowy or rainy day, but it's not a depressing record. It's almost like a more subdued version of what Sufjan Stevens would release. Musee Mecanique would be a fantastic opening act for Stevens or Iron & Wine. If this is what they're capable of on their debut, I can't wait to see what these guys put out the next time around.

This is refreshing to listen to. It is not just "pretty" or "catchy," this really is "Beautiful." I paid full price at the record store for this because the digipack format is what I desire and I wanted this in new condition. Now I wish I had bought the vinyl version because when something is this beautiful it should be played on the stereo, loud and clear to fill the air. This disc reminds me of "Sun Kil Moon's" first album or "L'Altra" with great lyrics, harmonies, melodic and the music alone would make a great instrumental. It does have a 70's quality in that it is easy to listen to, yet not contrived. Sounds very fresh, perfect for a party, office, background music or any situation.
