Book Description

2 Fitness Favorites from Exercise Guru January 31, 1995

Hold It! You should know that:

  • Walking is not one of the best exercises and will never get you fit
  • For certain body types, stair climbers will not trim your thighs and buttocks or give you slim hips
  • You do not need expensive health club memberships to become fit
  • You do not need to exercise for more than an hour a day to lose weight or increase your fitness level
Hold It! You're Exercising Wrong analyzes popular exercise techniques and explains why they do or do not work. Using his client-proven methods of fitness, Edward Jackowski renames body types and stresses their importance when choosing an exercise routine, details the four essential phases of any workout, lists the best exercises for weight loss, and provides motivational techniques to keep you going. Interspersing more than 150 tips on health and exercise, Hold It! You're Exercising Wrong is a no-nonsense, all-you-need-to-know guide to getting fit and staying that way.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

"I challenge you to realize that whatever you have or haven't been doing for fitness is most likely very wrong," says fitness expert Edward J. Jackowski. Hold It! You're Exercising Wrong aims to separate exercise fact from fiction in an easy-to-read format of 156 tips plus "the ultimate workout." Some of Jackowski's points are startling, like, "You could walk from New York to California and still not be fit," and, "For certain body types, step classes and stair climbers will actually increase the size of your buttocks, thighs, and hips."

Jackowski's tips sometimes motivate you to get moving ("If you don't find time for fitness, sooner or later you'll have to find time to stay home and be sick"), and sometimes educate you about an effective program ("When starting out, it's more important to increase your time than increasing intensity"). He recommends different exercise programs for different body types, which he renames "cone" (big on top, slim hips), "ruler" (hip and shoulder width are similar, few curves), "spoon" (small on top, wide hips), and "hourglass" (solid and thick in upper and lower body, smaller waist). Each type requires different exercises to shape up and slim down, which he describes. --Joan Price

5.0 out of 5 stars The best thing that ever happened to me, December 30, 1999
By
C (San Diego, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hold It! You're Exercising Wrong: Your Prescription for First-Class Fitness Fast! (Paperback)
I'd just like to say that I am a 15 year old girl who was just on the fringes of obesity. That's right, WAS. Thanks to this book, I've lost 70 pounds and currently going for the last few pounds. I couldn't believe it myself but the way the clothes fit (as well as the new ones I was forced to purchase:) and the compliments I get tell me that it MUST be true. It has changed my life. I was so unhappy before and didn't feel pretty enough or good enough. I wanted to end my life for awhile but decided that it wasn't worth doing over something that I COULD change. (It's never worth it btw) So I did change. And now I'm one happy and smaller hourglass girl! :) I know I must sound like an infomercial but I swear it's all true. If you are thinking about getting this book, I suggest you do because you will be happier and very proud of yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars hold it, this guy is right!, June 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Hold It! You're Exercising Wrong: Your Prescription for First-Class Fitness Fast! (Paperback)
After playing high school and college sports I read this book, thinking that I couldn't become a better athlete. I was wrong, big time. At 29 I'm faster quicker and stronger, and in the best shape of my life. This guy knows his stuff, and he doesn't advocate weights.

His tips may be bold, but he sure ain't wrong. If you are unmotivated, this is the quickest easiest way to get in shape. And since most of this country is out of shape, he sees the whole picture on motivation and education. His fitness program works, ilver plain and simple, it just makes sense. And it's not common sense, 'cause if it were, there wouldn't be so many poorly overdeveloped bodies at all the gyms I see.

I've trimmed body fat within weeks, improved strength, and I feel great!! If you try this workout you will love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe it actually worked!, April 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Hold It! You're Exercising Wrong: Your Prescription for First-Class Fitness Fast! (Paperback)
I can recommend this book 100%. I was shocked to find that after 2 1/2 weeks I had lost a quarter of an inch off my thighs, hips and waist. Initially I was intrigued (I am a spoon body type and had seen my hips and legs get bigger with step aerobics and exercise bikes) but skeptical because I am a health care professional who specializes in orthopedics. This book offers good information for the work out "novice" as well as those who have spent a great deal of time working out without results. The text is easy to understand and makes excellent points, though most comments made are from the author's personal experience vs. scientific studies.
