Hold on to Love by Mollie Hunter,
By Victoria Zepp (St. Louis, MO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: hold on to love (Hardcover)
Bridie McShane, a fifteen year old writer, is living in the midst of World War II. She lives with her grandparents and works for them in their flower shop, writing and going to school at night. No one approves of her aspirations to be a poet except her brother. Bridie's grandparents are determined to find a husband for her, but she manages to find love on her own. She struggles to keep her relationship afloat, however, when her lover leaves to join the navy. Join Bridie as she fights for independence, the ability to live the life she dreams of, and the love she desires.
Question #5: Do the times shape the individual or the individual shape the times? I believe that, in regard the book "Hold on to Love", the times shaped the individual. Bridie was very consumed in herself and her own goals throughout the beginning of the novel, but becomes much more aware of world issues as the novel progresses. When her grandfather was rejoicing that Hitler would not invade their country, a Jew Bridie sold flowers to every week said that he could not be happy when Jews were dying across the globe. Bridie also sees the world with new eyes when her fiance joins the navy. She realized that even though the war was very far away, the course of her life could be changed forever.
