This is a high quality, one-of-a-kind set. It's the only set that has hinging or swing-out shelves. No more dumping the pieces out on the table. Quick setup and put-away.
This is a great chess board for home or for a chess game at the coffee shop. Big enough for a good game, but portable and easy to carry. The pieces stay firmly on the shelves inside the board. It's easy to see if a piece is missing before put-away; it's very unlikely you'll lose a piece (If you do, we'll send you a free replacement!).
High quality hand carved Staunton style pieces from India. These are noticeably better than pieces made in China. The board squares are thick sturdy bamboo, not veneer.

I won this chess set in a contest prior to the holidays. I never thought much about it until it arrived through the mail. What an innovative and high quality portable chess set! I no longer put it in its carrying case because it looks so cool and is a great conversation piece when it sits out on our game table. I have three sons and we all played it throughout the holidays and we have recommended it to friends who visited recently. Very well done HoldenArt!

I just opened this chess set as it is going to be a birthday present for a friend and I wanted to put all the pieces on the magnetic strip.
I have no idea where these other reviews came from. For the price I paid ($90) for this item, the quality stinks. The bamboo board has scratches all over it. The wood is not sealed in any way to protect from future damage. The entire product screams CHEAP.
The "hand carved" pieces look like they were carved using slave labor in India. I am returning this item.
EDIT: The maker of this product responded to my Amazon comment. I respect that. I may not like a product but I appreciate a well thought out comment. If Mr. Holden creates a higher quality/more expensive version of his chess set I would consider buying one.

I have one of these boards and it is great for travel. It is really nice to be able to place the "taken" pieces back on the magnetic shelf right there at the board. Each opponent can see what has been taken and the pieces aren't just floating around getting lost. The whole thing packs up with the pieces neatly placed on the shelf and all you do is pop the hinge up and start loading the board. Nicely made out of bamboo with a good feel. Great quality.
