From the Author

This book is intensely spiritual, personal, and practical. Every one of the stories I tell here are true. They are not fictionalized, nor are they compilations of bits and pieces of several stories. In some cases, those who shared their stories asked that I keep their identities a secret. In these cases, I changed minor details so that they are not recognizable.

I chose to use real stories because I have seen how God has used the sharing of my personal story to encourage others. Knowing you are listening to someone who has been there gives greater credence to what is said. This is as it should be. God tells us to comfort others with the comfort we have received from Him. In these pages, I share the real comfort God has given real husbands and wives, along with practical solutions, wisdom, and advice. I hope and pray that you are encouraged and helped so you will become one of us; who has come through a difficult season of marriage victoriously and will go on to comfort others with assurance of God's love and redeeming power.
I first crafted this book in 1998 (eight years removed from our ordeal). At that time the publisher required me to address it only to wives. Now that I am publishing directly, I have expanded the reading audience to include husbands and wives.  I decided not to make the reading tedious by saying "him or her" repeatedly throughout. The message of this book applies to husbands and wives, so despite the gender of the pronouns, please freely apply the message to your needs. The only distinctions would be where Scripture specifically assigns differing roles and responsibilities to husbands and wives. I trust that if you are a man whose wife's problems are causing your marriage to go through hell, you will be able to apply the contents of this book to your situation. Whether you are a husband or wife reading this, I pray you will find help here to get through this difficult time in your marriage and go on to enjoy the good years ahead of you.

We celebrated our 32 wedding anniversary in the summer of 2011 and look forward to many more. Our years of marital "hell" are more than two decades behind us. We will never forget what we went through together but the pain is gone and the joy remains. We also never want to forget those things we learned that might help you and your spouse make it through to the happy years ahead. Our prayers go with you on this journey.

I recently finished reading this book (devouring it is more of an apt description). My husband is, as I write, "going through hell", and I am clinging tenaciously to my God, because He is my only hope. All around me, I am being persuaded to "let him go", " get rid of him", etc, - the world's answers to all problems - discard & recycle. Jesus very graciously led me to Connie Neal's book. At last, here in written form was the feelings of my heart - what about all the promises I made to You, Lord, & the promises You made to me? I loved this book and have re-read it now several times over these past couple of months. I am doing all that Connie suggests that she and the others she wrote about who have experienced first hand the anguish of storms and trials in their marriages did when there was nothing they could do other than turn to God. I am so grateful for the honesty and obedience of all these christians who have exposed the most awful times of their lives for the encouragement of ME. Watch this space to see how God triumphs!!!

I believe every woman (married or not) should read this book and keep it in her library. Personally, I want to share the book with others but I am reluctant to loan my copy so I have purchased copies to give away. YES! I believe it is that good. I never realized so many women go through similar things with their husbands. This book covers whatever the problems are or might be. Connie Neal has been there and she spoke with and received input from other women who have been there -- their husabnds may have been unfaithful, or abusive, or had cancer, or walked out, or committed a crime. But whatever his personal hell the wife goes through the crisis too. Bill McCartney founder of Promise Keepers said: "This book shows a wife how to go through tough times with her husband without faltering in her own faith, and how to be a source of spiritual strength for him. Men, if you're going through tough times or fighting some spiritual battle, do yourself a favor, give your wife this book." That last sentence is what happened to me. My husband spotted this book several months ago and got it for me. I didn't know at the time how much I was going to need it. But God did. So my recommendation is, get the book and read it. Then keep it in your library. I pray you never need it, but if you do you will have it and if you don't I still believe it will help to read it -- maybe it will help you to help another woman going through a crisis with her husband.

Connie Neal is one of the best artists I have had the privilege of reading! Her work on this book, and research into the lives of real people in real situations is filled with honesty. Makes me know the feelings, thoughts I had as I journeyed with my husband through cancer were normal, and that I was not a flegling Christian because of my weakness.
Keep Writing Connie!!!!!!

I saw this book in the store, and it kept calling my name, for many reasons ... but it seemed a reasonable choice, at the time I was looking for ways to help my husband through some difficult times
Once i began reading the book, I found it to be a help to me spiritually . It covered all the bases of my relationship with God and my spouse. I knew I was being ministered to through this book.
I look at things so differently now... not just because of the author's practical applications of God's Word,(which was truly enlighting) , but the sheer ability to motivate me to change and place myself in a position to seek God more in regards to my marriage, and His total purpose for marriage.

This book made God's plan for marriage so clear. It provided a much needed contrast to what the world says marriage is.

Unfortunately, I came across this book rather too late for its excellent guidance to help save my marriage. But I look forward to using the wisdom in this book in future relationships, whether marriage is involved or not.

There are many themes that cross the stories in this book, each of provide insight regarding how to overcome denial, face the issues that structure relationships and simply be realistic.

The writing is in a strong and caring voice. The concern and caring alone in the author's tone is invaluable and I felt that I was in good hands while exploring very painful mistakes I had made. I learned how in fact I created many of the problems I had been blaming my significant other for. This was a painful but powerful trial by fire to go through and I am grateful to the author for making this possible for me.

I recommend this book to anyone in a troubled marriage or even considering marriage and especially to those spouses brave enough to have a look at themselves as well as their partners.

This is a beautiful book, it shows married couples how to get through the tough times without faltering in their faith, and how to be a source of spiritual strength for each other during those tough times.

It's a powerful book with deeply moving true stories.

I can honestly say that I feel if you follow Connies' advice and follow the practical and biblical style instructions, a dramatic difference CAN be made in your marriage.

The advice here will encourage, train and equip couples to get through the "worst" and stay together through those difficult times in their marriage.

I love the fact that the author is incredibly honest, she helps you realize that the feelings and thoughts you are having are normal and others go/have gone through the same crisis.

I really do recommend couples, partners and those in a relationship or marriage read this book, it's for all those going through tough times that are having a big impact on your marriage/relationship.
