Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-A rich little gem about the warm relationship between a father and daughter. Sunday is Daddy and Jemma's special day. On this particular Sunday morning, she wiggles with energy, awaiting the time her grandmother will let her wake him up. Even though it's raining, the two "...sailed uptown on a dinosaur hunt." When Jemma encounters the fierce grin of the Tyrannosaurus rex at the Natural History Museum, Daddy catches her up in a big hug. The day ends and they return home. No mother is mentioned; instead, readers meet a loving family unit comprised of a grandmother, father, and child. Hays's engaging black-and-white illustrations add to the feeling of shared pleasures. This short chapter book will appeal to children looking for a good story in beginning-reader format.

From Booklist

Gr. 2^-3, younger for reading aloud. With clear, expressive black-and-white pencil illustrations, this very simple chapter book tells a warm story about a small child's loving relationship with her single-parent father. All week long, Daddy has to go to work from early to late, but Sunday is the special day he spends with Jemma. At home with Grandma, they play and hug and tease; then Jemma and her dad go on a dinosaur hunt to the museum; afterward they come back home to dinner, story time, and bed. It's good to see this kind of family in a story. Yes, it's idyllic--not a hint of strain anywhere--but the loneliness is here, too, and children will respond to the heartfelt love. Hazel Rochman
