This is the second book in the series and is just as good as the first one. Very well written and is a good story that keeps you interested. I like the characters and of course the dog in the story, and would recommend this book as a very good read.

I was bemoaning the fact that Lyndon Stacey had not written anymore horse mysteries, but she has more than filled the void with the Daniel Wheldon series. Excellent plot lines, well drawn characters, beautiful settings. The key thing for dog lovers is they can read these books safely without fear ;).

The Dartmoor ponies and bogs are major players in this new crime series, along with dogs, horse trainers, and Rumanian thugs. Daniel Whelan is a young former cop who is now a rural delivery driver, whose routes take him to stables and horse trainers in an interesting backwater. You find out what led to being 'former' about half-way through the book. His buddy is a retired police dog named Taz, who is like Lassie with an attitude. (Yes, 'timmy' does nearly fall into a well-like situation.) The story line deals with some tough issues, but Stacey seems to control the ugliness, not making us wade through gratuitous violence or seaminess just for the thrill. There is violence - fight scenes, car chases - that moves the plot along quickly. I would enjoy reading more about Daniel, and hope that the author will keep the generous boss, the motherly pony stable owner, and the boss's cop son in the future stories. These unlikely 'Irregulars' make for a great team of crime-busters.

Lyndon Stacey's novels are a wonderful addition to the British horse racing library. I was so happy to find her novels. A must read!
