Book Description

Holiday Forever is a fictional story of the rural Midwest, in the early nineteen hundreds, of the family farm boyhood and manhood of Billy Bartel who nearly lost his life to grief and drink, of is daughter Nancy and the aunt who raised her; and of an unusually progressive care facility named Holiday Forever, with an 'anything goes policy' - probably the only care facility ever close by the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency and a state vice squad. It's a story of endurance, as young Billy faces one tragedy after another, including the violent death of his father, and subsequent loss of the family farm to a lecherous uncle. Then Billy settles into a drab life working at the foundry, going out with "the boys," and is unprepared when the pretty young secretary, Clair proposes to him. Or did he propose to her? Although Billy loves Clair deeply, married life presents challenges to this young man whose only previous experience with "romance" was with the infamous Ellsville grils.

Holiday Forever is primarily a love story; the love of Billy for his wife Clair and the love he missed with his daughter Nancy, the love Nancy's Aunt Ruth learned to give to herself and then passed on to others, and the love between Dianne Russy and Lila Mae Higgins, two lesbian lovers more bold than usual for the time and place they lived. But it's also about rapacious small-town lawyers, bungling DEA agents, and the power of the mind and heart to transform wherever and whatever it finds itself.

Holiday Forever - the nursing and health care facility- challenges the simplistic view of the world we live in and shocks the community with its policies of living and approaching life's end with total abandonment and enthusiasm.

Holiday Forever, the novel, examines life through real life situations - often humorously and often tragically. It questions the values and consequences of foolish consistency, universal beliefs, and limits of any kind, orthodoxy, conformity, absurdity, intuition, well adjustment, religion, drug policy, gambling, grief, nudity and sexual preferences.

5.0 out of 5 stars HolidayForever..Neil Haugerud...Humor is a tool. September 2, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Holiday Forever impressed me and peaked my interest in one way because the presentation is unusual. Neil Haugerud managed to introduce one character after another who was eccentric or at least not a bit 'run of the mill'. The reader's interest was captured even though it was not evident for some time how the characters related to each other. Even the connection of the title was not revealed for a long time. I enjoyed that small suspense. Each time a new chapter began, I found myself trying to understand the new character which always was somewhat unlike the previous characters. The author did an excellent job of describing vividly each of the many characters. In addition to my interest in the characters and their colorful verbalizations, the underlying message came through loud and clear. Respect is the key word that enabled Nancy, in the book, to realize the needs and desires of her guests. Humor is shown to be an approach to bringing home many of the messages in the book which I admire in the author. I heartily recommend this book to readers of all ages as I think it has messages about tolerance that can benefit everyone. Thankfully I found something to read that has enriched my mind and conscience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Neil Haugerud is a wonderful storyteller July 26, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
If getting pulled into a great book is like going on a fascinating journey, then Holiday Forever is a journey I will repeat. I want to revisit the people I met there and listen to their stories again. The author, Neil Haugerud is a wonderful storyteller ... creating characters with depth & history. As I read I grew to care about each of them and wanted things to turn out well for each of them. I definitely want to stay at the residence that Neil has created. Imagine, citizens who need assistance with daily life being treated with respect and being provided the space to experience the freedom to choose and live their lives as they wish. We can only hope we will each find such a place in our future.

Just as he did in his previous book, Jailhouse Stories: Memories of a Small-Town Sheriff, Neil tells this story with a wry sense of humor and a mighty understanding of peoples strengths & foibles. I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Holiday Forever author neil haugerud July 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Holiday Forever is a poignant tale lead by 4 strong women, 2 sisters, an orphaned infant and a drill-sergeant type nursing home supervisor; each who overcame hurdles, each very different but each having guts and determination. Their lives are intertwined in a small Minnesota rural community. Among their stories: a nursing home is acquired, the infant, now an adult, becomes the central character. Holiday Forever is the new name and a revolution in how most nursing homes operate begins. Residents are called guests, their rooms change from prisons to HOME, where as any homeowner they are allowed to make changes within the room as they like.. They became involved in everyday decisions and activity. This is a glimpse of Holiday Forever. Fresh and alive. You laugh with them and you grieve with them. But bureaucracy brought it to a close.

The authors' vivid descriptions of the characters gives them real life; you would recognize each person, if met on the street and you would call them by name. But more importantly the author brings the topic of how we care for persons who need assistance in living, whether our elders or our younger population, with an alternative example for discussion . Do we warehouse or do we provide an environment where living occurs inside of life, active to their ability, instead of living outside of life, waiting for the end of life? Some archaic practices and beliefs should be examined and reexamined.

Post script: As a daughter whose 93 year old mother died 3 months ago in a nursing home, I am grieved that so few options exist. There must be a better way but it will take determination. elaine voss
