PreSchool-Grade 2-- What seems like a sure-fire idea for an appealing picture book gets bogged down by a text that is too wordy, too obvious, and too dull to capture children's attention for long. It's doubly disappointing given the popularity of Pulver's characters--Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy--and the charm of Karas's ingenuous pencil and watercolor illustrations. When the famous trio enrolls in Mrs. Holiday's handwriting school to improve their poor penmanship, they learn that their various problems can be easily overcome. While the advice offered may be potentially useful for children in similar situations, it is not sufficiently interesting to carry the book. In contrast to the didacticism of the text, Karas's pictures are charming, showing a jolly, if somewhat messy Santa; a tiny fairy; and an ebullient, bouncing bunny. Despite the strength of the illustrations, it's unlikely that this story would receive more than cursory annual attention as a holiday curiosity. --Lisa Dennis, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh
