4.0 out of 5 stars MIXED BAG
Although the style of writing is overly descriptive and at first I thought it too difficult to read, the book nevertheless takes the reader along at a fair pace.

2.0 out of 5 stars An English seaside holiday is not everybody's cup of tea
Anybody who has experienced the faded tackiness of an English seaside resort will find Middleton's rendering all too familiar. The protagonist is an arrogant, unlikeable bore, which might leave you struggling to get through the novel. However, I found the book well written and very evocative of a holiday most would want to avoid.

Although the style of writing is overly descriptive and at first I thought it too difficult to read, the book nevertheless takes the reader along at a fair pace.

It describes a middle aged man's bleak holiday in England - to the place he went as a child. He has just split up from his wife and needs a place to recover and to gather his thoughts. He mingles with families with kids and reflects on their lives and relationships.

It's all rather bleak, but fascinating.

Some of the language is stilted and the sentences difficult to read and understand. The dialogue is surprisingly old fashioned and over elaborate, and I could never imagine anyone speaking like that in mid 70s Great Britain.

A good read if a little depressing.

Non of the characters are likeable in any sense.
