Biography

Paul Motian convened this trio for a special project at New York’s Village Vanguard in February 2009. From a week of concert recordings, Motian and producer Manfred Eicher subsequently selected the material presented on Lost In A Dream. The album puts an emphasis on balladry, using ballads as vehicles for profound soloing and group playing. In these touching performances of Paul’s ... Read more in Amazon's Paul Motian Store

1.0 out of 5 stars Make it Stop! December 17, 2013
Format:Audio CD
There must be some people who appreciate this. All I could hear was some otherwise fine music being turned into a loud and VERY discordant mess.

I stumbled across this looking for a good performance of Holiday for Strings. Needless to say, I did not consider this to be even a poor performance of Holiday for Strings. I literally had to rip the headphones off my ears. I'm a big jazz fan, and have been for more than 50 years. Evidently I'm still too square for this "music".

Try it at your own risk.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but not the best Motian November 4, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Though I have only recently begun to delve into Paul Motian's body of work, I've heard enough to say that while "Holiday for Strings" is enjoyable, it's definitely not his best. My favorite album by Motian has to be "Tribute", which was one of his first and is a masterpiece; "I Have The Room Above Her" is also quite nice. But "Holiday for Strings" falls a bit short, especially compositionally. A similar melodic motif seems to be repeated a little too much throughout the album, and considering its 40-some minute running time, it can get a little repetitive.

The first track is really good, though, and I recommend that you buy it alone as an MP3. Also, I don't really see what makes the album "holiday"... it's pretty typical stuff as far as the Electric Bebop Band goes.
