5.0 out of 5 stars Going through a break-up?
This CD is great! Goran (and the others) write superb lyrics! It really helps if your going through a break-up. ;) Songs such as "Last Goodbye", "Ashes", and "Mistake" are awesome! This is a must buy for anyone.

2.0 out of 5 stars whiny
i don't get what all the fuss is about. the music is sugar-coated unoriginal fluff and the lyrics are about as whiny as you can get. and, i'm sorry, there is no comparison to the beatles. save your money

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gufs "Holiday From You"-An excellent buy!, April 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Holiday From You (Audio CD)
This is the latest CD from Milwaukee's Own, The Gufs. The Band has been a favorite on the Milwaukee music scene for years and it is great to have this new release from Atlantic Records Lava label. This CD is full of 12 of the best songs that the band has ever recorded. If you like Matchbox20, Goo Goo Dolls, or Gin Blossoms, you will adore this CD! I would also recommend picking up any of The Gufs earlier releases to see how great they were back then, and how TERRIFIC they are now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Gufs album to date, October 23, 2001

It has been noted in several interviews that the content of this cd was inspired by events going on in the bands life such as break ups. The first track on the cd, "Last Goodbye" is a great rock song with awesome lyrics that can & will make you sing very loud...especially if going through a break up! Every song on the cd shows the growing strength of Goran's talent both lyrically & vocally as well as the bands overall sound. I highly recommend it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as music gets., February 4, 2001

So they're the most impressive band playing in the country.

So everyone who hears them only needs a second to become a fan.

So radio won't play them.

Why?

Because mainstream radio is afraid of music that is talent based and not "commercial" (ie: if it hasnt been done before, they dont want it).

Well do yourself a favor and give these guys a listen. Every album they put out bests their previous, one of the hardest feats imaginable. They are fantastic live.

And if you are just looking for mellow songs to add to your mp3 list, get 'Ashes' for sure, and make sure you always have 'Give Back Yourself' somewhere. This is one of the all time great songs.

Somewhere out there is a DJ who hates his boss because his boss won't let him play The Gufs.

I hate him too.

5.0 out of 5 stars pure pop paradise, August 24, 2000
This review is from: Holiday From You (Audio CD)
I have only had this cd for 5 days but have not stopped playing it since. This band is just that good. I hear similarities to Jars of Clay, but the Gufs have a meatier sound in their music. The phrasing is similiar, and the melodies are also without being copies. The first seven songs are just the best pop songs you'll find on one cd. It's a shame these guys are not big on the charts, but if you're willing to take a chance I can guarantee this gem will not disappoint. At first I thought I was a little off in comparing the Gufs to Jars of Clay. however recently in the Encyclodea of Contemporary Christian Music I read the following: "The Gufs attracted a following from fans of Christian music, which surged when they toured with the Jars of Clay." So the comparison was not so far off after all. The music on Holiday From You is a perfect example of power pop with an acoustic touch. The lyrics are poetic and personal and higly literate. This is not music to be played as background music, but needs to be listened to closely and absorbed to be truly understood

5.0 out of 5 stars A freekin' monster CD with12 killers., October 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Holiday From You (Audio CD)
Ex - Frozen Ghost man Arnold Lanni have produced this awesome album. Awesome it is. A freekin' monster CD with12 killers. You have to buy this album if you like modern melodic rock with acoustic traces. Like Goo Goo Dolls at their best moments. Like Crowded House at their rockiest moments. Like Semisonic when they're at their most melodic mind. Well I dont wanna go on telling you superlatives. This is MORE than a must. Probably Top 5 in '99, when we sum it up

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it or regret it!, October 2, 2001
This review is from: Holiday From You (Audio CD)
The first time I heard the album I knew I would buy it. The Gufs have a catchy and engrossing style that makes their music very accessible to many people. It tells of simple truths that are sometimes hard to find when being on the wrong end of a break-up. "Last Goodbye" is a powerful opening punch into what I would call a great album for getting over someone. The Gufs have a strong sense of melody that carries through to most of thier music. "Happily ever after" and "Somewhere out there" are highlights of a strong album from beginning to end. This is a must buy!

I have bought THREE copies of this CD. Maybe four, I've lost count. Why? I keep LOSING it! Or I give it to radio station managers in the hopes it will catch on. But that isn't important...what is important is that I like it so much that I can't stand to be without it. You don't get many guys singing about where they went wrong, it's a refreshing change AND the music is excellent to boot. I heard "Lake 17" live in 1997...I'm glad it got a slot on this album. I sure wish I could hear all the other songs live one day....I can always hope! Buy this album. If you like the GooGoo Dolls, Matchbox 20, Jars of Clay...if you like these bands and you wish you could just find that one band that's better than all of them...this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, beyond compare!, September 24, 2000

This review is from: Holiday From You (Audio CD)
I got this CD for Christmas of last year, and it has been in heavy rotation ever since. If you like the cool melodies of bands such as Jars of Clay mixed with the rockin' sounds of more alternative picks such as Better Than Ezra, go and buy this CD now, without a doubt. I also own the self-titled debut CD, which is pretty good, but this is above and beyond any expectations I had when I first listened to it. As a girl from Milwaukee, of course I feel some hometown pride, but from a completely objective perspective, the band rocks! The lyrics are so incredible and heartfelt, you feel as if they're speaking directly on your behalf. Angry or confused about a relationship? You may hear words that express your emotions, in songs such as "Surrounded" or "Mistake." Give it a shot, you will NOT be disappointed!
