5.0 out of 5 stars HIFI sound and more, April 20, 2000

An EXCELLENT quality recording, especially the low organ pedal tones on the last track (16-32hz). The last 10 seconds of the CD has a continuous 16hz pedal C!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible!! The Best Ron Nelson Collection Around!!, November 13, 2003
This review is from: Holidays & Epiphanies (Audio CD)
This is yet another example of one of the best band sounds on any audio recording. The Dallas Wind Symphony under the baton of Jerry Junkin and Ron Nelson himself produces an interpretation of some of Ron Nelson's masterwoks that is so spectacular that I challenge anyone to find a better one. I give this recording all of the praise that a collection of recordings of this caliber deserves. Well done Dallas Wind Symphony! This CD contains many examples of what a truly talented wind ensemble can do. This disc is a must-have item for any student of music or just someone who enjoys wind band music. Band Music just doesn't get much (if any) better than this. Once again: Well done Dallas Wind Symphony!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ron Nelson - My Favorite Composer, August 5, 2004
This review is from: Holidays & Epiphanies (Audio CD)
Having worked with Mr. Nelson personally, I find him and his music to be an inspiration to classical music composition of the 21st century. Nelson takes full advantage of the dynamic and aesthetic potential a wind symphony has to offer: from the light and fun "Rocky Point Holiday" to the dark and powerful "Epiphanies". This recording is a must-have for anyone having any taste in classical music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music that will move you!, January 23, 1999

This review is from: Holidays & Epiphanies (Audio CD)
This CD is a very nice blend of classical/concert band music. The Courtly Airs & Dances are especially nice, with Basse Dance my favorite (wish it was longer!). Another favorite is Lauds (Praise High Day). Ron Nelson seems to have a way of knowing just what we want to hear. Some of the music is very complex, and Passacaglia is a masterpiece! I highly recommend this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Band Music to Treasure, April 30, 2001

I love a good disc of band music. There are some real standards here--the Rocky Point Holiday and the Sonoran Desert Holiday especially. This disc features the Dallas Wind Symphony--a group that usually puts out a good CD. The notes are especially informative--a nice treat for band historians and enthusiasts. The Courtly Airs and Dances is a nice find--I found myself paritcularly engaged by the Saltarello and the Sarabande; as is the Passacaglia and the Chaconne. Another wonderful recording by Reference!

Have been a fan of Rocky Point Holiday since I first heard it performed by WTSU Symphonic Orchestra in 1974 & only regret was that I didn't buy their album at the time. This Dallas ensemble is well rehearsed & right on with every note. This recording lets you hear things you wouldn't necessarily hear other than being in the concert hall. Have heard a bass drum for the first time so I'm impressed!! Now it's time to upgrade my speakers!!!

I've come to like Ron Nelson's music after hearing much of it at live performances. This recording by the Dallas Wind Symphony with Jerry Junkin (from 1996) is an excellent performance and recording. I listen to it often. My personal favorite in the Passacaglia, which Nelson himself conducts.

Genuinely exciting music from this extraordinarily talented American composer...he lifts ones spirits with his rhythms and themes, and sends me searching for more! Exceptionally well performed by this brilliant Dallas group. I was so happy to hear that Ron Nelson is alive, thriving, and still composing. Can't wait to hear more of his music...just sorry it took me so long to discover him!
