From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-This comprehensive reference tool has been substantially enlarged and updated from the 1994 edition. The alphabetically arranged entries on secular and religious holidays from more than 100 countries, and all 50 states, are brief two-to-three paragraph entries, and include holidays of national or religious importance, as well as colorful local observances. This edition contains over 500 new entries, adding the admission days for all 50 states, independence days for the countries of the world, and an assortment of other observances, such as the Grant Wood Art Festival in Iowa and the United Nations World Food Day. The indexes have also been expanded to provide more subject access, an ethnic and geographical index, and listings by nation and state. This is a strong complement to other holiday reference works, providing fewer entries in more detail than Holidays and Anniversaries of the World (1990) and more articles, but less folklore information than Margaret MacDonald's Folklore of World Holidays (1991, both Gale). With the additional material, this new edition is a worthwhile purchase for libraries developing a comprehensive holiday reference collection.
