5.0 out of 5 stars I'm okay with this one...............
At first glance, this book looked as if it was going to be just another collection of old-fashioned "kitchen" recipes - the same old stuff that teaches you how to make a beeswax body cream using borax & lanolin. But this one was suprisingly a bit different. The author focuses mainly on the sourcing and use of fair trade and organic ingredients - with most if not all of...

I bought this book as a gift for my Mother-in-Law, who is interested in homemade beauty treatments. When I got it I was dissapointed because the ingredients were not simple things you find in your kitchen or grocery store (not to mention the book is very plain). Almost every ingredient was a special oil or plant (some I'd never heard of) that might be expensive and time consuming to find or buy. If you have the time and money to seek out those ingredients, then this book is for you ; But if your looking for something more practical, I suggest the book, "Return to Beauty: Old-World Recipes for Great Radiant Skin" by Narine Nikogosian. This book had realistic ingredients that you can find at home. Plus it was more pleasing to the eye with full color photos as well as recipes for different seasons and skin types.

At first glance, this book looked as if it was going to be just another collection of old-fashioned "kitchen" recipes - the same old stuff that teaches you how to make a beeswax body cream using borax & lanolin. But this one was suprisingly a bit different. The author focuses mainly on the sourcing and use of fair trade and organic ingredients - with most if not all of the recipes formulated to feed & nourish the skin. I have tried and liked the massage "Chocolate Orange Body Butter Bar" made with pure raw cocoa powder (she has a seperate chapter dedicated to chocolate body potions). She even has a rhassoul mud hair treatment (great for softening & detoxing the hair) along with a simple shampoo using African Black Soap. Overall, I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book!, October 15, 2009

I've reviewed over a dozen books lately, looking for natural recipes I'm not allergic to. Most say to use citric acid for a preservative. I'm allergic to corn & citrus, which citric acid is made from. This book is very refreshing & helpful! Of all the ones I've looked at, this is by far tops on my list! Many, many wonderful recipes I can really use, not have to substitute something. Thank you, Star!

I was really looking forward to this book... especially since there are over 100 recipes too. But I am a bit disappointed by it.

Many of the recipes are nothing new. It reminded me of other natural skincare recipe, nothing too original or unique.

On a personal note, I've made my own face cream just before I purchased the book. I found the simple recipe free online. Made with pure beeswax, almond oil, and essential oils. It's great for winter skincare.

But I do give Ms. Star credit for her interest in using natural ingredients. Overall it's just OK book for beginners.
