5.0 out of 5 stars A review for those who are not midwives... August 22, 2005
Format:Hardcover
I'm not a midwife, just a first-time mom who is planning an unattended home delivery. My husband and I have both been delving into this book repeatedly getting prepared for the birth of our baby. I've not seen this depth of detail, length of discussion on each topic or breadth of coverage anywhere else. I'm sure there are medical texts out there and other midwivery texts, but this is easily accessable to the non-trained. I found that getting her first volume was necessary though (though thankfully much less expensive). I've ended up with no medical practitioner at all and so it has been essential to be able to look things up that don't just affect labor, delivery and post-partum.

This book covers everything from delivering babies who aren't in vertex, to homeopathy, to how to recognize a problem, to water births, to what supplies you might want on hand, to evaluating the flow of labor and evaluating newborn well being. It also gives guidence on when to transport.

Please note that this text says that you should review the anatomy and physiology that was covered in the first volume before reading that part of this second volume since much information is not repeated and is necessary to understanding.

Overall I'd highly recommend this text to anyone seeking an unattended birth who wants to be really, really prepared. ...or even to those who will have an attended birth, but just feel better knowing everything. It is a very expensive and extensive (and heavy!) text though, so if you don't truly need it you might not want to bother, but it is enjoyable to read.

Note to midwives: Much of her information on Orthodox Jews is not correct. Please do not go by her information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute best text on childbirth for the professional!!! December 28, 2004
Format:Hardcover
I just received this on December 24 and since it is 1400 pages, to say the least I have not made it completely through the book yet! However...I have made a thorough review of the table of contents and also have skimmed through the chapters. The illustrations are of the same caliber of Anne's former works and the tables are exhaustively full of helpful and sometimes hard to find information. Her section on what to carry in your birth bag and why, in order of importance is for me, a midwifery student, most helpful! Like Anne's former works, this one will become one of my most trusted, and most used sources of information on childbirth and care of the newborn. Unlike her previous works, this one is hardbound in the most beautiful purple binding with gold letting on the spine, the pages are of the highest archival quality paper and it is a book well worth the price! If you do not have this book and you are a nurse, midwife, obstetrician, doula, cbe, or are involved in the care of birthing women, you would do well to invest in this fine tome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, inside and out December 30, 2004
Format:Hardcover
This is easily the finest book on midwifery and birthing that I own. As a collector of rare and fine books, I can especially appreciate the care that was taken in the quality of manufacture. The illustrations are perfect, and the layout of the information is exceptional; it is more like many small books on all the myriad topics involved in the labor, birthing, and postpartum period.

Anne Frye has earned the right to rest now upon her laurels, but I feel sure that we will see more of her lovely creations in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Move over, Varney December 12, 2006
Format:Hardcover
This is absolutely the best midwifery book I've ever seen. It is beautiful and so full of information that at first it seems overwhelming. Anne Frye is her usual every-little-detailed self, leaving no questions unanswered except the ones we don't know yet. Geared toward home birth, it is also great for hospital-based midwives who haven't forgotten what real midwifery is. I love this book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good text for all midwives January 30, 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This text should be in every midwife's library. There is lots of information packed into this book. I find the index a little tricky to use to navigate the book, but that is my only real complaint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bold step in the right direction! January 28, 2007
Format:Hardcover
I love this book. I am an apprenticing midwife. I have found the logic that Anne Frye uses to be right on with what I have believed birth to be.

Anne Frye give women the benefit of the power of their bodies to give birth. Thank you Anne!

The textbooks by anne frye are the books I ALWAYS go to and reference. They are amazingly details and fun to read, but I'm also pretty interested in the technical stuff. Volume 1 gives lots o details on nutrition for optimal pregnancy and the second is great- you can't find this information online! :)Worth ALLLLL the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Midwife's treasure trove October 18, 2010
By musbee
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is simply the most thorough midwifery textbook I've found. There is a wealth of knowledge in its pages, and I never pick it up without learning something new. I keep delving into it to see what I can happen across, but it will also be the book that I always have on-hand for rare and unfamiliar situations, because it is so complete and carefully researched.
