A Good, Solid Introduction to Integral Theory & Practice, November 9, 2007
This review is from: Holistic Perspectives and Integral Theory: On Seeing What Is (Paperback)
Bravo to Frank Ferendo for writing this accessible introduction to integral theory and practice. HOLISTIC PERSPECTIVES is divided into two sections, one on integral holistic model and one on applications and practice.
As a practicing therapist, I appreciated his chapter on Integral psychology. As an entrepreneur and business owner, I enjoyed his chapter on Integral business and leadership. The author touched on my of the same points that I did in my leadership books, particularly LEADING PEOPLE THE BLACK BELT WAY: CONQUERING THE FIVE CORE PROBLEMS FACING LEADERS TODAY.
Packed with great great ideas and quotes from integral people like Albert Einstein, HOLISTIC PERSPECTIVES explains the integral model, the four quadrants and other intergral perspectives for the beginning reader.
Respectfully offered, my concerns about the book were twofold:
(1) I found the choppy layout of the book to be more distracting than supportive as I read.
(2) Sometimes (unintentionally, I'm sure) the author lapses into a flatland viewpoint. For example, on pg. 103, he writes, "Integral medicine is about health and healing." Such a statement is only partially true. In order to be fully integral, an integral perspective on medicine needs to be as much about disease and death as it is about health and healing.
Overall, I would highly recommend HOLISTIC PERSPECITVES to anyone starting an interest in integral approaches. If you've struggled wading through Ken Wilber's concepts, this is the book for you!
Well done, Frank Ferendo!

What does it mean to be holistic?, June 24, 2008
This review is from: Holistic Perspectives and Integral Theory: On Seeing What Is (Paperback)
For many years I have considered myself to be "holistic", seeing the bigger picture of life and integrating mind, body and spirit. Yet I had never studied or learned what it really meant to be holistic until I came across this book. In this book, Dr. Ferendo takes us on a journey through the history and evolution of consciousness and a holistic world view.
Today we are living in a new world with amazing technology, and instant access to the world, but we are often stuck with limiting thoughts, language and habits from the past. No wonder we get so stressed and overwhelmed. We are operating on one cylinder in a multi-faceted world. Even though the capacity of human beings to learn and grow is huge, in adulthood we tend to stop learning new things. But the rules of the road have changed, and it is time to get a new drivers manual and learn the new landscape. This book is that new manual, and can be applied to all aspects of your life. It will transform the way you see the world, and should be on your bookshelf, and on the curriculum of every college campus.
