This is one fine "Bar-B-Que"...it's not really a grill, it's more of a portable/smoker oven---you cook with the lid closed, and if you're looking for fancy "grill marks" on your food & enjoy constantly flipping burgers, etc.---this won't work for you! "IT DOES NOT OPERATE LIKE OTHER GRILLS!"

Follow the Cooking & Operation Manual for the Companion, light the burners, preheat, place food on the stainless steel cooking grid, close the lid, set your timer, relax, have a beverage, while the sturdy Companion does the smokin'---you'll have some of the best tasting meals ever!

I've smoked trout, salmon, catfish, turkey breast, whole chicken, portobello mushrooms & all kinds of vegetables with excellent results everytime. No flare-ups and comes with a great warranty!

We have had this grill for almost a year and have never tasted anything else grilled to this level. Relatives have the normal-sized version so we had some prior experience, and the Companion was a perfect present. I could repeat myself endlessly of how wonderful this grill is (and constantly do whenever I find friends who are in search of a new grill), but instead will challenge anyone to find a better grill.

To be fair I will list the only con I can think of: We didn't really clean it for about 6 months so it took about 2 hours of heavy scrubbing to get it clean again. But then again, how many grills ever get completely shiny after half a year of heavy use?

Bottom Line: BUY THIS GRILL!!! Meat only needs to be flipped a max of two times and still cooks evenly. I have never burned anything in almost a year.

In have owned the Holland Companion Outdoor Oven for several years.I refer to it as an oven, because that is what it is, not a grill. The instructions tell you to cook with the cover closed at all times. This is because it cooks like an oven, not a grill. This is fine if you like baking steaks, burgers, hot dogs, but then why not save money on all the gas this thing uses, and cook in your oven? Drippings run ineffectively into a pan without vaporizing, thus no smoke flavor. I agree there is no flareup, this is because nothing is burning, just baking. Very poor design to say the least. The legs are unweildy,the stacks are loose fitting, and fall apart. It s somewhat well built of stainless steel, but even if were made of Kryptonite, it wouldn't cook effectively. If you like sizzling steaks, pink in the center, this grill won't do it. If you like hot dogs and burgers with black grill marks, juicy inside-not with this over-priced gas hog!! Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere when considering an outdoor GRILL. But if you still would like an outdoor portable oven, I have one available CHEAP!!(Hurry, my trash pickup is Wednesday!!).

I gave it 4 stars in my orig post, only because i ran out of gas in the middle of cooking fish using those little tanks. Before i ever purchased this, I knew it would be a problem with these little gas tanks. Well, it stopped before it was done. That was the bad side, it was only warm when i went to take the fish off. I found another tank, put it on, started it up, cooked for another 10 minutes. Figured the fish would be ruined, but it wasn't, it was perfect. Beats me how come, but the fish came out better then it ever has when i have BBQ'D. I am ordering the conversion hose so i can slap on a real propane tank. My feeling is it should come with one, even if the cost is another $15.00. But, I'm very satisfied with the unit, great little BBQ, well made, and most importantly, it works as advertised.
I changed to 5 stars, it has been working for a long time, and now that I know how to use it, makes a big difference. I also bought a small propane tank and it works great, I recommend you bypass the little tanks and bite the bullet for a larger tank which can also be filled almost anywhere.

I've owned a holland companion grill for approx 4 years and love it because.....
1. Set it and forget it......No flare ups preheat for 10 minutes on high insert meat or veges and start timing absolutely no need to open the smoker oven until the cooking time is up......yes this is more a smoker oven than a barbeque grill no direct flame fat drips onto a catch pan and vaporizes giving the items cooking a wonderful flavor a whole 5lb cutup chicken takes approx. 45 minutes hamburgers approx 15 minutes

2. Uses very little gas a 1 lb propane bottle will cook on high for about 6 hours a 20lb tank seems to last forever absolutely incredible how efficient this is....

3. Well made, stainless steel, used approx. 3 times a week for about 8 months a year....with very little cleanup

For the record, this is my second Holland product. The large home model I had for over 10 years and loved it. That is why I bought the "companion" model for my RV outings.
It worked well, only when it would stay lit. When I first got it, it would absolutely not stay lit. I tried a different hose, different propane source, both the small disposable and large tank with hose and had same problem with it going out in the most gentle breeze. Called the company and they sent me a new regulator and it worked slightly better. When I use the grill, I have to set it up and surround it with plywood to protect it from the wind and even then, a wayward breeze will blow it out. Today, I've had it. This is the last time I will use it and it's going into the trash and I'll purchase something else. There are lots of other small portable gas grill I see on this site that have 4 and 5 star ratings and I'll give one of them a try.

I've had this Grill for about 4 years now. Last night I ate some venison steaks and again reminded myself how I love this Grill. When it's cold, I shut down one of the chimneys to help hold the heat. (It was 15 degrees last night). I clean it only once a year as the drippings add so much flavor. I don't know what other people say about it being cheap. It goes with me everywhere, and the only thing i've had to do was to clean out the regulator with a piece of wire. We get spider mites here and they tend to clog "ANY" gas grill orifice. All my neighbors constantly ask me to bring my grill over as the flavor is unbeatable. I have a Weber and a large Gas Grill and the only time I ever use them is when I need to burn some hotdogs for a large group.. Get the 20 pnd extension hose. I only drag the 1 pd bottles when I go to the woods.

We recently bought an RV to travel in. Because we love our large Holland Grill, we knew we would love the campanion, when we first saw it. Because of it's size, it's perfect to travel with. It does an outstanding job cooking our food. This household has no complaints about the compamion!

To anyone who is looking for a new pit. Holland grills are the BEST.I purchased one 10 years ago for my home and from then on I knew that I would never own any other pit. So when it came time to buy one for my camper ther was no dout what I would get.

This portable grill is unbelievable. The meat comes out very tasty &
is especially good for people who don't want to constantly be watching
the meat, turning it, and checking to make sure it doesn't burn. It
has me convinced that it is the best! It is especially good for thick
cuts of meat such as roasts, cornish game hens, etc. The roasts come
out tasting better than prime rib. It is pricey, but well worth the cost.
If the meat doesn't turn out succulent, it is not the grill's fault.
You must use the chart that comes with it & you can't go wrong.
