Editorial Reviews

Product Description

On their Blind Pig label debut, the Kings explore the various byways where traditional 'blues'and 'country' music intersect. They cover classic sides by Hank Williams, Sr., the Rolling Stones and Muddy Waters, seamlessly mixed with their own originals. Holler And Stomp is one of the freshest and most distinctive blues records in recent memory.

"The word on the street is that The Cash Box Kings are the up and coming young guns of the Chicago blues scene, and with good reason. The music has the liveliness and energy that only roots music genius can provide." --Chicago Blues Guide

Even though the Cash Box Kings have made a few albums over the past decade or so, you might not have heard of them. But the band's unique approach to old blues material has won them plaudits and awards,

Now they have a new CD -- for the first time on a national label -- and if you're a blues fan, you owe it to yourself to give them a listen.

The album, "Holler and Stomp" (Blind Pig Records) is a gem of a CD, filled with original and classic tracks that tie together, in the words of harpist, singer and songwriter Joe Nosek, "the various byways where traditional 'blues' and 'country' intersect."

Now it's one thing to say you're interested in this old music, and even to be able to play a few of the tunes with some accuracy. But it's another thing entirely to to be able to re-create the originals and write new material that's faithful to this 1940s and '50s style, and do it with authentic vitality.

What kind of music are we talking about? The songs they cover give a hint: Jagger & Richards' take on an old blues style, "Off the Hook," Muddy Waters' "Feel Like Going Home," Lightnin' Hopkins' "Katie Mae," Ray Sharpe's "Oh My Baby's Gone" and Hank Williams' "Blues Come Around." The Waters tune is a old country blues that predates his Chicago years; Hopkins was a master of old country blues; Sharpe has reportedly been described as a "black rockabilly player," and the "greatest white-sounding black dude ever"; and of course Hank Williams was simply the legendary Hank Williams.

So the CBK are in fine company. And the stuff they've created on their own sounds just as good.

I recently went into my local public library looking for some new music and found this one in the blues section. I'd never heard of this band so I borrowed this CD from the library's collection to check it out. I'm glad I discovered this band; I liked this CD so much I ordered my own copy. I'll be checking out their other releases as well.

This band is apparently one of the up and coming blues acts on the North American blues scene. I hope they find commercial success; they deserve it. This 2011 album - on Blind Pig Records - is excellent, with first rate music and musicianship from start to finish.

If you like blues, you should like this album. Highly recommended.

This album is twelve tracks, for a total playing time of just over 41 minutes. Eight of the tracks are written by members of the band, four are covers. The covers are: Off The Hook (by Jagger & Richards), Feel Like Going Home (by Muddy Waters), Blues Come Around (by Hank Williams) and Oh My Baby's Gone (by Ray Sharpe). I wasn't familiar with Ray Sharpe so I checked him out online. He was a guitar player and vocalist who played some great sounding rockabilliy during the late 1950s and early 1960s. I'll be ordering one of his CDs to check him out further.

Bottom Line: great blues band and a great blues CD. I've just discovered this band and, after hearing this CD, I'll be buying more of their CDs.

My current favorite band playing in the Chicago metro area. They play traditional Chicago-style blues that I never get tired of hearing.
