I read Brooks' book, Blowing zen, which was a really enjoyable read. The album hollow bell is no let down either. It took a few plays before i got in to it but then it unfolded like a zen koan. I highly recommend this cd.

The "honkyoku" Zen music that Brooks plays really does nudge you toward a quieter, more contemplative state of mind. Try listening to it while crammed on a subway or walking a busy street - really interesting to experience beauty and tranquility during downtown rush-hour.

This disc brings together a number of core pieces of the shakuhachi. It is easily the best recording out there by a current player. Many of the masters are now dead or they simply are just too old to record a quality product anymore. It is a pleasure to hear this beautiful sound now being carried by Ray Brooks. Buy it, it is a core holding in our time.

Read the book Blowing Zen, then bought the CD. The music unfolds for the listener with each track. I love that about any good recording. I would have like to have owned the CD while reading the book. The sounds of the shakuhachi definetely take you to that quiet place.

Listen to this music while you read Blowing Zen: Finding an Authentic Life, the same musician and author. The book will take you on a journey of surprise, humour and inspiration, while you listen to the takented renditions of the songs discussing the book. The shakuhachi is a deep, soulful sound from Japan. Highly recommended.

Brooks's shakuhachi has an intoxicating sound. The cd is perfect to quiet the mind and body. Great for meditation and introspection. I also read his book blowing zen. I highly recommened both the cd and the book. KW
