Product Description

Forgetting your homework was never this dangerous!

Little Lucy Snow was meant to be enjoying her first day at the nice elementary school in town; however a macabre twist of fate sees her enrolled instead at Miss Weaver's Academy for the Scientifically Gifted and Ethically Unfettered--also known as Hollow Fields.

Located on the outskirts of Nullsville and run by the insidious Engineers, the grim boarding school dedicates itself to raising the next generation of mad scientists and evil geniuses! Classes include Live Taxidermy, Cross-Species Body-Part Transplantation and Killer Robot Construction, and for her own survival Lucy has to master them quickly...the student with the lowest grades at the end of each school week is sent to the windmill for detention--and so far, no child has ever returned!

5.0 out of 5 stars I have great eyes. And I loved it., May 27, 2011

This review is from: Hollow Fields Vol. 1 (Kindle Edition)
If you don't have great eyes for close objects, do not bother getting this for your Kindle. I found it somewhat challenging to read, in excellent light.

That said -- this is a great graphic novel! The main story reaches a conclusion in three volumes -- this is volume 1. Fifty packed pages, filled with great art, and lots of tiny text. I think they could have sized this slightly better -- for soemthing like this, white bordering should be minimized as much as possible. I've added a screenshot of a Kindle page as a sample.

This is dark, but lighthearted. There are zombies, grave-robbers, and killer robots, but everything is mostly light-hearted throughout. I was reminded somewhat of The Venture Brothers, Fullmetal Alchemist, Girl Genius, and Invader Zim so far as the dark styling goes. Plus, all of these other series have a vaguely similar treatment of mad science.

To start, Lucy Snow accidently goes to the wrong boarding school, and signs a contract. The school looks much better than she expected -- and the coursework is much stranger. Her immediate thoughts are to leave, but then she is reminded of the contract. One of the dangers is detention -- each week, the lowest performing student is sent to detention, and is never heard from again.

I found the start to be slow going. Things pick up considerably once Lucy picks up a cube at the library. After that, I had trouble stopping, and picked up the other two volumes. Read them all straight through. This is one of the better graphic novels that I've read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Muddy, overcompressed, September 4, 2010
This review is from: Hollow Fields Vol. 1 (Kindle Edition)
It looks yucky on my DX. The publisher overdid it with jpg compression, and threw out most of the artwork detail. The lettering got hit even worse, my strained eyes gave up reading in a few pages.

Try the free preview, maybe the graphics have been fixed up since this un-review.
