Like some of you non-Japanese readers, I was drawn to this band due to Sion Sono's brilliant film Love Exposure, which featured tracks from this album. The lyrics of one of the tracks (Hollow Me) was even used as a church hymn for the cult featured in this film. I immediately hunted down the musicians responsible, and this is where I ended up.This was the last studio album recorded by Yura Yura Teikoku before they disbanded. They have been around since the late 80s and was apparently quite popular in Japan. So what we in the US are seeing here is the final flash in the pan before this band vanished forever. Weird, gorgeous, and accessible, Hollow Me is what pop music would sound like if it was allowed to be original and experimental. It is what psychedelic rock would sound like if it wasn't so serious about the whole "being trippy" crap. Yeah, you may not understand what the singer is saying, but if you're okay with not playing singalong, then you'll be fine. Hell, you'll be more than fine, you'll be ecstatic. After all, this is music that is brilliant, odd, and catchy all at once. And in case you didn't notice, this kind of stuff doesn't come around very often.

I'm not sure how I heard of these guys--probably a review somewhere. Sometimes, you just have to take a chance. I wasn't that into this album at first. But when I get a new one I like to play it all the time, sometimes more than once a day, just to see if anything will stick. In other words, I do to MYSELF what Top 40 Radio is doing to everybody else, only I'm doing it with some weird Japanese group.So after awhile, sure enough, stuff starts to stick. This record has a lot of really nice hooks and things going on. Of course, they're singing in Japanese, so God knows what the songs are about. I hope they're positive messages, and not something about killing your parents or something. I'd give this one more like 3 1/2 stars. Is it one I say you MUST have? No. But I do like it. And you might like it, too. |
