3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable November 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was a big fan of the first book, Hollowland, and downloaded Hollowmen the minute I found out it was available. It took me under 2 hours to finish, so it's a pretty quick read. I want to be clear that I am a huge Amanda Hocking fan and I believe her writing has done nothing but improve as she continues to write and publish. I also want to make it clear that Hollowmen is very much worth reading! But I did have some issues with the book, pros and cons as with everything, so I'll detail them here. Please be warned- this review WILL contain some spoilers!

**SPOILER ALERT**

The heroine is a bit too cold and distant regarding taking on a new lover when her old one is out there waiting for her. Remy King doesn't have a problem sleeping with/making out with one guy and then moving onto the next one, showing very little remorse during what would be, for some people, an act which would cause some highly conflicted emotions. Remy is a bit colder than most girls, and love doesn't enter the equation in this book, which could explain her lack of guilt. But I found it off-putting that she would so easily disregard anything she felt for Lazlo and latch onto the next available guy.

I enjoyed the new characters added to the book, but they received very little backstory and were difficult to care about from the perspective of the reader. There were a lot of character deaths, but only two of them drew any kind of emotional reaction from me- one for the shock value and one because I genuinely liked the character. Characters I'd cared for in the first book were given a few terse lines to explain their fate, and some were left inexplicably for us to wonder what ever happened to them.

The ending was disappointing for me. The plot was similar to the first one in that it was a "traveling story," without much of an arc but with a series of events strung together. But the goal in the first book was to find Max. The goal in this book seemed too vague and was achieved too easily. There was no big climax to the story, or at least it didn't feel like it to me. It may have been Hocking's intention to make the book very flatline, possibly to convey some of Remy's detached nature as well, but I just didn't care for it.

(Also, at the end of the book Remy makes a silly comment about how their current location is ideal because they only have to deal with zombies three months out of the year- when in fact the entire back wall of their cabin is made of glass. Even if it is facing a lake and even if zombies only show three months a year, I doubt that's very secure against a horde of hungry undead. It seemed out of character for Remy to be so blase. Just my opinion.)

**END SPOILERS**

I am hoping that Hollowmen is one of several books to come in this series, that it's just a decent book to pass the time and bridge the gap between Hollowland and Hocking's next masterpiece. It could be a good "filler" book in a larger story arc. Hocking introduced some new characters who could grow to be fan favorites, and she also left some other characters' fates undecided, which makes me more eager than ever to read the third installment in the series.

Although this wasn't one of my favorites, it was still an original, exciting book and a monumental effort from Amanda Hocking. Great job.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hollowtrylle...I mean, Hollowmen. November 18, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
After having worked my way through the rather poorly-written Trylle Trilogy (Twilight with trolls), I found that I would give Amanda Hocking another chance through the form of Hollowland. Let me first just say that I thoroughly enjoyed Hollowland: I found the characters were enjoyable, the romance was believable, Remy was a strong lead and the situations arguably realistic. I especially enjoyed the explanations of the zombies and the darkness it did not sidestep. I found that Hocking could write if she did not appeal to the Twilight demographic and attempted something for an older, more experienced audience.

I downloaded Hollowmen about a week ago and am a good chunk of the way through, but I find that I just can't bring myself to finish it. The editing is terrible. Not just unsightly, but there are times when you must stop reading and cringe. "Crazy fast" is used to describe the movement of a zombie (honestly), and the fates of characters that we came to love in Hollowland are handled with about as much care as a mugging. Remember Blue, the doctor? Well, his fate is summed up like this: "Blue was definitely a zombie, and a young one too, which meant he'd be hella fast and hella strong". There are parts handled and written so clumsily that make you wonder if Hocking knows she's writing a book, not some sort of feverish diary. The romance I could see oncoming was silly and cliché, nowhere near to matching that of the first book. Remy's new companions are boring and "exported characters" that completely fail to get you interested as Hollowland did. Even Remy herself begins to become a Wendy Everly at times. The once-promising series seems to be going the way of the awful Trylle Trilogy, which is very sad. All in all, it's very easy to see why Hocking is self-published.

Yet, if you consider yourself part of the Twilight demographic, I say go for it. But others may find their intelligence insulted and find loose ends seemingly forgotten about. This is such a shame as, with work, Hocking could be a decent author. She just seems to have a thing for unconvincing love triangles that do nothing but advance the adventure of the heroine. I mean, what does that say about the men of her books? Save yourself some money and don't bother.

1.0 out of 5 stars I just really wanted it to be good! November 27, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was such a disappointing sequel in so many ways that are better stated in other reviews, I just wanted to reiterate and contribute to theirs by posting my own. I kept wanting Hocking to reach the potential that she could have with this sequel but she simply couldn't seem to. Sadly I have to say don't bother with this one.
