Intelligent And Very Different British Christmas Story With Superb Veteran Cast, December 10, 2006
This review is from: The Holly and the Ivy [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The classic and in many ways non-traditional 1954 yuletide story "The Holly and the Ivy", is probably one of the most elusive Christmas movies ever made being rarely shown nowadays during the Christmas season on television. Long unavailable on VHS and never released onto DVD it is one film that really doesn't deserve to be forgotten as it is a fine film that is realistic and surprisingly candid and is an effort blessed with excellent performances from its starry British cast. The story of a splintered family reuniting for a Christmas family celebration during which all the frustrations and disappointments of the family members are exposed might not seem terribly original nowadays however this theme is dealt with in an intelligent and non sentimental manner here that really catches the interest. Of course any story brought to life by the more than capable hands of players of the stature of Sir Ralph Richardson, Celia Johnson and Margaret Leighton is sure to impress and this along with the often very stark writing makes "The Holly and the Ivy", a very different but just as satisying Christmas story to cherish.

Hard To Find, June 5, 2009
This review is from: The Holly and the Ivy [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is one of the movies we used to look forward to seeing on an annual basis along with the likes of other classics such as Holiday Inn, Christmas in Connecticut, We're No Angels, The Bishop's Wife and of course White Christmas. But it seems like it has now disappeared among the relics. I'm glad I found a copy. If you see one, grab it! The resale alone is worth your efforts.

Found it on DVD-Region 2, November 5, 2009
This review is from: The Holly and the Ivy [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The movie is a wonderful, nearly forgotten and very hard to find [Turner Classic Movies recently had it on its schedule but for some reason did not televise it] Christmas classic about a family reunion of a vicar, his in-laws and grown children at Christmas in post WWII England. If you love well-acted adult drama in the best sense this is for you. Yes it has been on VHS [currently not available] but I've been looking for it for some time now on DVD, and have finally found it at Amazon UK in a recently released good image/sound Region 2 dvd version [although you'll need an all-region dvd player to view it.] Hooray! If you have Region 2 capability, buy it, you'll love it.
