5.0 out of 5 stars Holly Pond Hill A Child's Book of Christmas, November 29, 2003
By
This is one of the most darling books I have seen in a long time. It is perfect to read while sitting on the couch in front of a warm fireplace on a cold snowy evening just before Christmas. The characters that have been created to live in Holly Pond Hill, are just precious. I have found a new delight with each page I turned.
The book is just the size to hold in one hand, in front a a child, while they look at the pictures as you read the poems. As a child, I would have loved these pictures of home and happiness. As a Mother, or Aunt, or Grandmother, I love the deep rich colors and borders and tho the poems are more for my enjoyment, I can then talk with my child about their warm gloves and the times we made gingerbread man cookies. It is wonderful for both the reader and child.
I believe it is just the size and shape to be placed on the table under the lamp right next to the chair, where it can be taken out and gone over many times during the holiday. What a treasure to find such a book and know how to share it with your child. I can just imagine it now, "Remember when we went to the Christmas Tree Farm and you picked ...."

4.0 out of 5 stars Holly Pond Hill: A Child's Book of Christmas (Holly Pond Hill), December 9, 2008
ISBN 0525470174 - One of the things I've begun to find, as I read through a very big pile of Christmas books, is that there are many re-tellings of a few stories and not enough original, unique books. This one is one of the rare, original, unique ones and well worth adding to your collection.

Ten untitled poems express the joy, excitement and fun of the holiday season. Each set of facing pages has an illustration on one side that matches the poem on the other.

Everything that's good about Christmas is in here - from trees to gingerbread, from Jesus's birth to Christmas carols. Paul Kartepeter's poems are short and sweet, perfect for a bedtime read or just curling up with on the couch. The book has a pillowed cover and the pages are edged in gold, so it's already Christmas-y even before you open it! The only complaint I have is that the illustrations, by Susan Wheeler, are a bit smaller than really necessary. The board book pages are sturdy and will take a bit of rough handling with ease, but this really isn't a childrens' book just for children so I don't imagine it will get as worn as other, more common, board books. This is more the sort of book you will want to, even have to, read to your child. You'll enjoy at least as much as, maybe even more than, your young one!
