Book Description

November 25, 2000
This is a compelling compilation of nostalgic photographs and essays that chronicle the Golden Age of Hollywood-from its beginnings in silent film through the 1960s. Hollywood Archive is a visual tour of classic Hollywood both on-screen and off. The actors, directors-all the players-tell the Hollywood story in their own words, many for the first time.

Organized as an almanac, this comprehensive volume covers everything anyone ever wanted to know about Hollywood-and more.

Original essays by such Hollywood insiders as:
• Richard de Mille, son of famed director Cecil B. DeMille
• Bette Davis gives advice to the lovelorn
• Shirley Temple writes to father Christmas
• Robert Osborne, host of the American Movie Classics television show and the celebrated film critic, on his personal list of favorites and his critical choices
• Well-known Hollywood historian Marc Wanamaker, often seen on "E!" (Entertainment television) on "The First Talkies"
• Longtime director/producer Roger Corman "master of the macabre"on "Horror Films"
• Clayton Moore, who starred as the Lone Ranger, on "Westerns"
• John Provost, star of Lassie on "Animals in Film"
• Tom Kelley, son of the photographer whose notorious nudes of Marilyn Monroe started her career
• Robert Harris and James C. Katz on film preservation
• Author Jim Heimann on the Hollywood nightlife scene
• Actor Robert Stack, whose first Hollywood kiss launched his career on "Screen Kisses"

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Bursting with lavish photographs and little-known facts, Hollywood Archive: The Hidden Story of Hollywood in the Golden Age makes a wonderful present for those smitten by the screen's past glamour. Editors Paddy Calistro and Fred E. Basten have culled stills from Hollywood's best archives and combined them with essays from insiders like Richard de Mille (son of director Cecil B. DeMille), Clayton Moore (aka The Lone Ranger) and Robert Osborne (host of Turner Movie Classics). What kinds of cars did stars drive? Where did they get their makeup? Who was the first screen sex goddess? These eclectic topics are presented "in the most subjective wayAwith love." 400 b&w and 100 color photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hollywood Archives, November 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Hollywood Archive: The Hidden History of Hollywood in the Golden Age (Hardcover)
One would think there couldn't be another anecdote about Hollywood that hasn't already been unearthed. But, "Hollywood Archives" is a treasure of wonderful new insights mined through the memories of thoses who lived in the moment and those who were priviledged onlookers. Lots of photos never before published with intimate looks in private scrapbooks as well as the glamour produced by the studio PR machines. Fascinating for everyone- not just Tinseltown addicts!! Now there truly can't be a stone left unturned...

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, September 26, 2002

This review is from: The Hollywood Archive: The Hidden History of Hollywood in the Golden Age (Hardcover)
I had expected this to be a good book, but it turned out to be some re-run from the other books about the golden age Hollywood, and the book was printed on bad quality paper. Also, who ever designed the book, and book cover, needs to do some improving. It looked unorganized, and uncreative. There's a little of everything, in this book. Too little of everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for ANY film fan!, January 3, 2002
This review is from: The Hollywood Archive: The Hidden History of Hollywood in the Golden Age (Hardcover)
This book tells you in the introduction that there will never be a complete book of Hollywood, which is true, but this is one of those rare books that comes close! Every page of this 350 page book is crammed full of information and photographs that make it fascinating beginning to end! If you are a film fan, particularly a vintage film fan, BUY THIS BOOK! You will not be disappointed!
