great update for the stuffy world of blackjack strategy,

anyone who has read other blackjack theory books should agree that "Hollywood Blackjack" is a refreshing change. i can think of other books that give similar information, but staring at charts is just not how i learn. dave also gives a glimpse in to a world of gambling that is what every aspiring gambler hopes to experience. it is great to know that the dream is still alive. and somewhere in another weird world, hunter thompson is surely proud.

All the info you need to beat the casinos,
This review is from: Hollywood Blackjack: An Uncensored Guide to Doing It Like a Pro (Paperback)
A couple of friends and I were having a massive Fiesta Party in Las Vegas and before we went, we wanted to see what we could learn about beating the house.
Card counting has been around for 50 years, but the problem with learning it is that all of the authors of previous books make you just want to skim the info. The subject is usually told in such a dry manner, you put the book down and never finish it. Dave Stann has solved this. Stann writes about the subject in a way that is entertaining enough that you don't want to put the book down. As a result, you get entertained and, at the same time, end up armed with all of the information that you need in order to take money away from those annoying casinos. This book is The Perfect!! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to become an advantage player.

Hollywood Blackjack is one of those books that I just sorta picked up in the bookstore to read for the hell of it, but then I just kept on reading. I think it seemed to me the first blackjack book I had ever seen where the author actually seemed to have fun gambling. Sure, Dave is a foul mouthed, arrogant jerk, but he knows what he's talking about. Blackjack has declined lately, but to see Dave's passion and know-how makes me think it could pick back up. Guaranteed to be the only gambling book that will ever make you laugh while reading. David Sklansky isn't exactly a stand-up comedian. Worth the buy if you're interested in beating the house. I think the best part is the math is easier to understand. The author seems to write like he's talking to you, not like most who seem like they're lecturing the class. Ever since reading it I've had mostly winning sessions at BJ.

I was surprised at how much I loved this book. Hollywood Dave isn't just one of the best blackjack players but he's a very entertaining and talented WRITER!! Even people who don't play blackjack will enjoy this book... some of the stories and crazy altercations that he shares are hillarious and unbelievable. He gives a fascinating look, behind the scenes of the world of blackjack in addition to offering very helpful for improving one's blackjack game!

Lacks Tournament Strategy,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hollywood Blackjack: An Uncensored Guide to Doing It Like a Pro (Paperback)
I purchased this book for information on playing blackjack tournaments. There is a brief 14 page chapter on blackjack tournaments. The chapter starts off saying that this book is not going to teach you anything about how to win a blackjack tournament, and to go "suck on it." Unfortunately, this information was not available in the advertisement for this book.
Much of the rest of the book rehashes old strategies including Basic Strategy and card counting using the High - Low system that are covered in Stanford Wong's "Professional Blackjack" book and elsewhere.

Hollywood Dave Walks the Walk,
This review is from: Hollywood Blackjack: An Uncensored Guide to Doing It Like a Pro (Paperback)
Sure there are numerous books teaching one how to play blackjack. Hollywood Blackjack is fresh and provides the reader with time-tested winning strategies, but in a clear, easy-to-follow manner tailored for today's casino environment. In his entertaining style, Hollywood Dave shares his recent experiences in beating the casinos. While we are treated to a primer on tournament play, Dave tells us about some of his tournament experiences. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

This book is better than "The Secret".,
By
This review is from: Hollywood Blackjack: An Uncensored Guide to Doing It Like a Pro (Paperback)
Granted...The Secret is a pile of poo....but this book has great advice. If you are not big on reading books that are full of stats and want to be entertained while getting some good advice at what to do at a blackjack table, then this book does the trick. It is young and hip.....not boring. for me that is always key.

Remarkable writing & amazingly comprehensive!,

This review is from: Hollywood Blackjack: An Uncensored Guide to Doing It Like a Pro (Paperback)
This book is Great! Of all of the blackjack books over the years (and you know the names...Uston, Revere, Wong, etc.) this is the first to present detailed information and strategy that's both fun and easy to read. Not just basic strategy, mind you (although it's there, too), but "camouflage" techniques and other details so important to ... how shall I say this ... advanced play. I was pleasantly surprised and this book is now #1 on my stack of well-read and highly earmarked blackjack books.

Recycled Material,

This review is from: Hollywood Blackjack: An Uncensored Guide to Doing It Like a Pro (Paperback)
I give this book 2 Stars, for the writing, its edgy and not a boring read like some other blackjack books. But its recycled material. If you are serious about becoming a card counter and have read numerous books before. You will not learn anything new.
It's 110 pages of him telling you to learn Basic Stategy, Learn Hi-Lo, Learn the Illustrious 18 and the FAB 4. Study them, remember them, and dont rush to the casino. While the rest of the 60 pages are filler pages. Telling you about how he made it onto the GSN as a host for the Blackjack Tournaments, and mentioning how he's not going to tell you his tournament secrets. Actually disappointed in this book as it was supposed to be realised in the fall of '06, and had been pushed back until now ( 8/07 ). Id suggest buying Stanford Wong's "Professional Blackjack" book and "Ultimate Blackjack Strategy Cards by Don Schlesinger" As well as doing a search for "Illustrious 18" and the "FAB 4" also by Don Schlesinger ( they are not books but index numbers you should know!). Also do a search for "betting ramp charts". As thats all this book teachs you. |
