I loved this book! For all of us who will never get the opportunity to eat a meal at Ivy or buy shoes on Rodeo Drive, Maggie Marr invites us behind the scenes into the gilded world of the Hollywood elite. 5.0 out of 5 stars Ladies - a MUST read!!!!, April 30, 2007

Hollywood Girls Club - I've never been more entertained by a book and cannot WAIT to see the movie! Maggie Marr has succeeded in capturing the essence of Hollywood business women's lives - and their fabulous shoes. If you're looking for the next big hit, or just a fabulous summer read, you must get Hollywood Girls Club. Think Sex in the City meets Entourage. Enough said. You will not be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Women in Hollywood movie business, June 11, 2007

Lawyer, motion picture literary agent, and now novelist, Maggie Marr has released her debut novel, Hollywood Girls Club. The first in a series is set in modern-day Hollywood and focuses on the lives and loves of three power players.

--Jessica Caulfied is president of the most powerful talent agency in town.

--Celeste Solange is the newest, hottest Hollywood babe, demanding $20 million per picture.

--Lydia Albright is a powerful movie producer with equally powerful enemies.

Although the three women are longtime friends, in a place where friendships last only a nanosecond, they are about to embark on their first project together, "Seven Minutes Past Midnight" (which sounds like a great title for a short story). A fourth star, the just-discovered writer Mary Anne Meyers, has the task of polishing the Seven Minutes script.

Each chapter is told from one of the characters' point of view and each chapter heading begins with the character's name and a style of shoe (Alexandra Neel Pumps, Louis Vuitton Marble Leather Pumps, etc) Not a shoe connoisseur, the chapter headings were lost on me. This character-driven novel gets off to a slow start mainly because of the parenthetical author intrusions that deviate the reader's attention (this is really annoying).

Another problem with the story is that all three women are interchangeable, which is a deft comment on those who are reaching for the stars. For about the first half of the book I kept having to revert to the dust jacket for clues on which woman owned the chapter. However, about mid-way, Marr seems to gain confidence in her characters and her story. Full of catfights and sex, Hollywood Girls Club is a rather predictable read. However, I think if Marr is just cutting her teeth in this first book, the story has a great structure, yet longs for compelling characters.

Armchair Interviews says: Ahhh, more about Hollywood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely written by an insider..., February 3, 2011

Salacious characters?! Absolutely. But none of the characters are one dimensional. They are all dealing with the crazy microcosm that is Hollywood, and I can only imagine that's no small feat. And at the beginning, you almost want them to be flat characters so you won't like anything about them. But the author gives them all challenges to see what kind of hard choices these characters will make and ultimately, found myself rooting for them. I've only worked on the outskirts of the film world, but Hollywood Girls Club rings true from the little moments I've seen. Kudos to Maggie Marr for taking all her experiences and bringing these characters to life -- in all their glamour and less-than-glamour.

What a deliciously fun book -- perfect for summer, or really any time. You'll find yourself instantly attracted to these feisty, ambitious, yet lovabale characters.

Finished this book in two days- one of those you can't wait to pick back up! I am a huge Entourage fan, and HGC provides even more insite than Entourage into behind-the-scenes workings of the movie industry. A must read for all of us People/Us Weekly addicts! An entertaining, addictive read- can't wait for the sequel!

2.0 out of 5 stars Crass, Shallow and Rude - nothing much else to offer, September 28, 2008
This review is from: Hollywood Girls Club: A Novel (Paperback)
I almost stopped reading this since the language and the writing seemed to be just one long string of curses from the beginning until the end. It is not as if I haven't heard most of it but I felt most of the profanity was just over the top and not necessary. I felt the author was just using the coarse language for the shock value and it did not add to the story. I did not like the characters, they were all shallow and without substance. The story line has potential since it is supposedly an inside look at the L. A. wheelings and dealings in the movie industry. However, the characters are shallow with little substance, the language is terrible and the writing does not move you to feel empathy or really even an interest in the characters. The author is writing another novel which includes some of the characters from this offering. I will not be reading it.

Entourage meets Sex In the City in this witty, LOL tale of four high-power women facing the crazy Hollywood jungle. Marr knows her stuff and it shows as she nails Hollywood lingo and attitudes. A ton of fun, great characters, and a wild ride.
