4.0 out of 5 stars Hollywood fan magazines great stories collected, May 5, 2004
This review is from: Hollywood & Great Fan Magazines (Hardcover)
This book has pages from Hollywoods great fan magazines from the 1930s when Hollywood was amazing.

Magazines like "Silver Screen" "Screenland" "Modern Screen" "Screen Book" and "Photoplay".

Don't expect color. This is all black and white non gloss but good quality paper. This is a hardback edition with a dust jacket. And at this price BUY IT! Fun to read. Pictures all through, and stories like:

What about Clark Gable Now?
Jean Harlow from extra to Star
The truth about William Powell
What was Hollywood thinking?
Norma Takes a Dare

The pictures are all b&W and don't expect todays high quality, but they aren't like bad scans either.

This is a great read and highly enjoyable and even funny. Well worth between $5 - 10 shipped (I mean to say including shipping in your total).

I can't speak for the earlier edition, though I am not sure it was a true hard back book. Ask sellers before buying 1970 version.

This version (1991 reprint) has 6 magazine covers on the front. The 1st edition from 1970 has a large image of a magazine with Katherine Hepburn on the front center.

Again, all of these magazine articals are from the 1930s.
in 1970 Newsday, Mademmoiselle, NY magazine, The NY Times Book Review and others all gave it raving reviews. This is all printed on the back of the dust jacket.

Neat inexpensive find. Go for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hollywood and the Great Fan Magazines, December 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A really good book! Not only does it cover the movie stars of past eras, it discusses the many fan magazines of earlier times who made money off the
"scandals" of the stars of the past. If the stars of today complain about their lack of privacy, the stars of the past had it even worse!
