A Memoir To Remember, November 10, 2006
This review is from: Hollywood and Me: My Wild Ride Through the Golden Age of Television (Paperback)
From his humble beginings at McGill University in Montreal to the sunny shores of Los Angeles; Bernie Rothman foundly recounts with humor and candor the ups and downs of working in television.
Rothman is an Emmy award winning writer and producer who went through good times and bum times and is still here. He started off in theater in Montreal, moved to Toronto to work in live television with Norman Jewison and eventually moved to LA. Along the way he worked on classic comedy series, worked with legendary performers like Julie Andrews, Judy Garland, George Burns, Peggy Lee, Red Skleton, Danny Kaye, Diana Ross,Dean Martin (sort of) Shari Lewis and Lamchop and many, many others. He recounts foundly (and sometimes not so foundly) working with these stars and many others.
Along the way he also produced two highly praised television movies Son-Rise and The Miracle of Kathy Miller with a very young Heln Hunt.He discusses his friendships with fellow Montrealers Leonard Cohen and William Shatner and his sometimes bumpy friendships with the performers he has worked with.
The memoir also discuss his rocky personal road and how he over came his problems. A very enjoyable read. Each chapter discusses a moment/show in his life and you are sometimes in awe of all the people he has worked with.
I recommend this book highly especially if you think working in show biz is easy. He has been at it for over 40 years and he is still at it.There will never quite be a television era like the one Rothman had the opportunity to work in and it is great that there are still people around who can tell us like it was.
And that's no snow job!
