Book Description

January 8, 2003 0786412909 978-0786412907
Only one year after the presentation of the first Academy Awards on May 16, 1929, two musicals—The Broadway Melody and The Hollywood Revue—joined the select group of five films nominated for Best Picture of the 1929–1930 season. The Broadway Melody won the award for Best Picture, and since then, 37 additional musicals have received Best Picture nominations. Of those, nine have won the award.

This book covers all 39 Hollywood musicals nominated for Best Picture, including song-and-dance fests like 42nd Street and Top Hat; original film musicals like The Wizard of Oz; film versions of stage musicals like The Music Man and Fiddler on the Roof; and the all-animated Beauty and the Beast. It explains why each film was nominated and why the winners won, points out the influences (mostly from the stage) that guided the productions, and discusses these films’ influences on succeeding films. Detailed plot descriptions are provided, along with interesting facts about the acting, direction, choreography, and orchestration; complete cast and production credits; and comments from critics.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Timing is everything. When Vogel began creating this work, there had not been a musical nominated for Best Picture since 1991's Beauty and the Beast, and so this reference book does not include the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge, which was both a musical and nominated for best picture. Nevertheless, the exclusion of that movie does not significantly distract from the stated purpose of the work, which is clearly indicated in the title. However, several other movies are also excluded, such as Amadeus (1984), Red Shoes (1948), Love Affair (1939), The Bells of St. Mary's (1945), The Country Girl (1954), and nashville (1975), based on the author's criteria that a musical must have songs and music as a primary, integral part of the story.

Thirty-eight musicals from The Broadway Melody (1929) to Beauty and the Beast are described, summarized, and discussed, in entries of approximately ten pages. Each entry begins with production credits and then proceeds to background information about the production and cast. The majority of each entry consists of plot summary. Occasionally there is discussion of the influence of a movie on other movies and musicals.

Several appendixes follow the entries, including a list of Academy Award nominations and winners for Best Director, Best Picture, Best Song, Musical Scoring, and Best Actor/Actress. The bibliography pulls primarily from biographies and standard film and musical film works. Recommended for performing arts collections that have need of this specialized type of reference tool. RBB
