5.0 out of 5 stars Hollywood Racks HR1400 Sport Rider SE 4-bike ROCKS!, November 6, 2008
This review is from: Hollywood Racks HR1400 Sport Rider SE 4-Bike Platform Style Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) (Sports)
Looked at several racks before finding the perfect one. We haul 4 "hybrid" bikes around. None have the traditional cross bar. The Hollywood Sport Rider supports the bikes by the tires/wheels. It weighs a bit, but if you fold it up, it balances nicely and can be put into the receiver easily. Also, it has a device to tighten it up once in the receiver, so it (and the bikes) do not wobble AT ALL as you cruise down the bumpy side roads. As with most anything in life, you get what you pay for with this awesome rack. Hope this helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Bike Rack for unusual bike frames, October 12, 2009

This bike rack is great for bikes of all sizes and shapes. We have many bikes in our household and several of them are mountain bikes with unusually thick frames. These bikes would not work on the usual bike racks even with the modifier poles extending from the handle bar post to the seat post.

This is a very sturdy rack and is easy to configure is many different ways. It may take a few times to find the best configuration for your bikes but once you get the hang of it this is a great rack. I have had to be creative with my 3 year old's bike and make sure the hook came over the seat because the frame is too low for the hook to secure it. Although this rack is easy to put on and take off it is a heavy (and bulky to store) so I end up leaving it on my van even when I may not need it for a few days.

I also feel this is a safe rack in case of an accident because the arm of this rack is so low that even with bikes on the rack it is unlikely a rear end collision will result in the rack or bike handle bars coming through the rear window of the car. This happened to an acquaintance who had a "hanging style" rack.

Overall I love this rack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solidly built - gets the job done, September 3, 2010

This review is from: Hollywood Racks HR1400 Sport Rider SE 4-Bike Platform Style Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) (Sports)
I've been looking for a rack with some specific criteria for a while - capacity for 4 bikes, platform rack, solidly constructed, holds mountain or road bikes, 2+2 configuration for when the family stays home. This was the best value.

Things I really like:
* This rack can fold in multiple ways - the top tube folds sideways, so the whole rack can fold up while attached to the car. Or the side tubes fold up for surprisingly compact storage. Locking pins are secure & make for easy setup.
* Includes a locking hitch pin and long cable lock in the package.
* Holds the bikes very securely. I had a hangning-style rack, and the bikes were too close, swung into each other damaging 2. This is rock solid. The bikes are held very securely.
* Ratcheting hold down clamps - once it's configured for your bikes, it's very quick to put the bikes on and off.

Workable, but minor annoyances:
* Attaching the extension to carry 4 bikes requires a wrench & two bolts with lockwashers - there's no quick disconnect. But on the plus side, it's much more secure, and only takes a minute.
* Two bikes that are exactly the same frame size can be a challenge, especially with horizontal top tubes. If the bikes are too close in size, the clamps can interfere. If there's any tilt to the top tube, it's much easier, or you can secure one clamp to the downtube. I made everything work, but it takes some configuration time when 2 bikes are identical in size.
* A padlock can lock the ratcheting clamps in place for extra security, but the holes are small - a standard Master lock doesn't fit. You need the kind with the smaller clasp.
* It's heavy. But to be fair, that's also a bonus - it needs to be heavy duty. But just know it's awkward to lift when fully assembled. I store it in 2 parts, which is much more workable.
* To secure the rack to the hitch, there's a threaded rod that creates tension on the hitch pin. Cool idea, but it takes some minor fiddling to get the hitch pin through the clamp properly. Not a big deal.
* The design of the main support is on an upward incline away from the car, which was smart, but it's still a big contraption and fairly close to the ground. Fire roads with steep transitions or parking lots crossing really high sidewalks need to be taken s-l-o-w-l-y. Don't expect to go crazy off-roading with this. At least not at high speed. I bottomed out only once - no damage - but it can happen, so take it easy.

Despite any minor annoyances, this was EXACTLY what I'm looking for. I highly recommend it. If you're even slightly mechanically inclined, this is a piece of cake. It's solidly built, does what it's supposed to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars NICE RACK, April 19, 2009
This review is from: Hollywood Racks HR1400 Sport Rider SE 4-Bike Platform Style Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) (Sports)
I BOUGHT THIS RACK FROM A MOM AND POP STORE IN MY HOME TOWN. I WAS RIPPED OFF AND SHOULD HAVE CHECKED IT OUT ON LINE, $307 IS A FAIR PRICE AS I PAID $350.

I LOVE THE RACK. IT IS A PAIN TO LOAD ALL OUR BIKES THE 1ST FEW TIMES BUT ONCE YOU LEARN WHERE EVERYTHING FITS IT GETS EASIER. THE RACK COMES WITH A KEY LOCKING CABLE THAT ALSO FITS THE HITCH. I STRUGGLED WITH TIE DOWNS, WHEELS TURNING AND HANDLEBARS SHIFTING ON THE RACK THAT HANGS OFF THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE. THIS ONE IS MUCH MORE SECURE, NOTHING MOVES.

THE ONLY REASON I AM ONLINE IS TO GET REPLACEMENT PARTS THAT MY LAB PUPS REMOVED FROM THE UNIT. WHEN NOT IN USE STORAGE MAY BE AN ISSUE FOR SOME FOLKS, IT IS BULKY AND ABOUT 80#s. I WOULD NOT WANT TO HAUL THE FAMILY BIKES ANY OTHER WAY.

Went together easily, and is a SOLID transport for my bikes. I only have carried mountain bikes, with wide tires so far, Kenda race King 2.5 wide fill the wheel holders completely... not sure anything wider would slide in easily. (BTW, bike is a 29er... and rack is plenty big enough.) Definitely worth it,bikes go on and off so easily, no more roof rack struggles!

Only concern is with Amazon... they suggested I purchase the seperate cable lock/locking linch pin kit to go with it. Which I did, only to find that when you buy the 4 bike rack, this set up is included. unfortunately, the additional lock kit arrived 5 days before the rest of my order, and I had already thrown away the packaging...

5.0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor and buy this rack, March 19, 2011

This review is from: Hollywood Racks HR1400 Sport Rider SE 4-Bike Platform Style Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) (Sports)
I purchased this rack some months ago and with spring's arrival got around to installing it. In a word - AWESOME! I've had Thule roof racks, Hollywood trunk racks and this by far is the best setup and design. Sure it's heavy at 85 lbs, but it's not like your carrying it. Take your time and read all the instructions thoroughly before beginning installation. It took me less than 1/2 hour to set up on the hitch.
Worried about excessive movement and play in the hitch mount? Forget it - this rack has an ingenious tensioner built in that pulls the rack against the hitch pin, thereby preventing any side to side motion or up down motion once in the hitch. Some of the roads in my small town are horrendous and this rack did not budge over the bumps.
The new ratchet system for the foam covered hold-down U arms is excellent. There's also holes on the U arms to hook padlocks through to lock the U arms in place. Couple that with the hitch lock/combination bike cable means your vehicle will need to be driven away by thieves if they expect to take the bikes off. This is a really well engineered product.
The wheel holders are easily adjustable, although it will take you a little while to get the bike sequence correct the 1st time mounting them. We took maybe 15 mins to figure out the best combo for 2 triathlon bikes and 2 kids bikes (different sizes). Once you have that configured it takes literally seconds to mount and lock the bikes in place.
Flipping the rack up is as simple as pulling the pin, tilting the rack into the vertical position and reinserting the pin. Done - that simple. We did however find the Velcro wheel tie-downs to be somewhat short for securing the kids bikes. We could just barely tie them down. Overall, you will not be disappointed with this rack. Although it is more expensive than other racks I researched on Amazon, it is worth every penny. The hitch lock and bike lock cable sells for $100 on its own, so money well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Piece of Equipment I've bought in years, October 10, 2010

This review is from: Hollywood Racks HR1400 Sport Rider SE 4-Bike Platform Style Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) (Sports)
Well thought out, versatile, no tools needed, carries bikes well. First trip we took 2 full suspensions and 1 hard tail to Colorado from LA absolutely no issues, carried 4 bikes in Colorado. Fold up out of the way on the vehicle and folds up excellent for storage in the garage. Comes with hitch pin lock, and cable lock keyed alike. Just a well engineered, functional, operator friendly piece of equipment. Little heavy from stored to hitch, but still only takes less than 2 minutes to hook up. I couldn't be happier; I highly recommend you buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars love it, August 3, 2010
This review is from: Hollywood Racks HR1400 Sport Rider SE 4-Bike Platform Style Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) (Sports)
Well this rack is pretty heavy but worth it I think. Usually it is just my bike so I have taken it apart so that it only caries 2 bikes. When I get together with some of my friends to go on a road trip it is very easy to reattach the other end so that it hold 4 bikes. Very sturdy and easy to lock the bikes up. It works great and worth every red cent!

This review is from: Hollywood Racks HR1400 Sport Rider SE 4-Bike Platform Style Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) (Sports)
The 4 bike rack is well built and very easy to load and unload. We take several grandkids to our riding trails and they have different style bikes. The clamp-down loading system makes it easy to get the different bikes on and off rack. This rack is exactly what I was looking for. It met our needs perfectly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hollywood Bike Rack, Hitch Mounted, June 7, 2010

This review is from: Hollywood Racks HR1400 Sport Rider SE 4-Bike Platform Style Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) (Sports)
As for the bike rack, it is a nice rack for the price, although it was amoung the higher priced bike racks, it is better made than most I looked at. Where I am not happy at all is the packaging that the bike rack was shipped in. The rack arrived damaged and I've yet to hear back from Amazon regarding the condition of the bike rack. I have not used it yet as I am waiting to see what Amazon will do for me to replace the damaged parts. It was damaged during shipping, but in any case, the packaging should be designed to the weight of the item it is supposed to protect. I have been in touch with Hollywood but I will need to pay for shipping of the replacement parts. I do not feel it is my responsability to pay for repairs that I did not bargan for. Again, I really like the bike rack, but not happy with the condition it arrived in. I should be able to purchase new stuff and be the first to put a scrach in it. I didn't plan to have it arrive looking like it was already a used piece of equipment.
