Format: Paperback
Rocker-turned-writer Marshal Crenshaw and some 20-odd rock music buffs combined talents to produce HOLLYWOOD ROCK, A GUIDE TO ROCK 'N' ROLL IN THE MOVIES. Presenting "information and opinion about rock films," the book makes no bones about covering "the good, the bad and the heinous." Originally published in 1994, this Plexus Publishing release looks to be a straight reprint of the original.

Arranged alphabetically, the 300+ films each rate a write-up ranging in length from 1/3 to 1/2 page. Very brief cast listings are followed by a comprehensive summary with basic plot, characters, featured artists and songs. Each entry is also rated on 'Music,' 'Attitude' and 'Fun.' Despite its title, the book is international in scope, including English, Australian and German films among others. An appendix on 'More Rock Films' lists more titles that didn't get a full review for various reasons.

Most of the usual suspects' are here - BLACKBOARD JUNGLE, AMERICAN HOT WAX, HARD DAY'S NIGHT, THE T.A.M.I. SHOW, WOODSTOCK, ROCKY HORROR SHOW, GIMME SHELTER, THIS IS SPINAL TAP, THE LAST WALTZ, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, YELLOW SUBMARINE, HIGH SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL, ROCK AROUND THE WORLD, ELVIS: THAT'S THE WAY IT IS, CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH, AMERICAN GRAFFITI, THAT'LL BE THE DAY, LA BAMBA, ROCK 'N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL and BEACH PARTY. As mentioned, not all the flicks were winners, witness Paul McCartney's GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADSTREET, TOMMY and SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND. You wonder why some films made the listing like DSEPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN but it's Crenshaw's call.

Film and music buffs will enjoy HOLLYWOOD ROCK It's a wide-ranging and entertaining guide to rock movies. Recommended.

Beside his talents as a songwriter/singer/guitarist, Marshall Crenshaw is a Rock & Roll historian extraordinaire!
This book has a vast amount of info about R&R in Hollywood movies...a R&R Movie Encyclopedia!

Format: Paperback
Crenshaw, one of the great musicians of the last 30 years, is a man of many talents. Songwriter, guitarist, singer-- and author. Clearly a lover of rock'n'roll movies, both the good ones and the bad ones, he's assembled a group of equally dedicated friends and put together this fairly comprehensive paean to the form.

I've had it for 15 years or so and I end up checking it all the time-- even if you haven't seen the films, it makes for amusing and informative perusing. Recommended.
